Mac air m1 dropdown menus not working ... safari, finder, or any application, nothing happens when you click on any menu item at the top of the screen... applications work fine, but you can’t use the dropdown menus. Running one external monitor. The problem goes away with a restart. Hoping this is not a recurring problem... wondering if anybody else is experiencing this issue?

I had some time and the hung dropdown menus problem reappeared for me, so I looked around a bit thinking it could be related to the external display, so I changed the resolution back to letting the system pick the resolution via "default for display" in system preferences/display. Since i had a 75 Hertz display, I had used that setting and picked the highest resolution, and when I reset it to "default for display", the dropdown menus started working again immediately without a restart. Not sure if this is a permanent fix yet, but it does correct the problem without a restart.

Sadly it seems that unless it becomes a public issue Apple ignores it. Kind of like the screen delamination issue a few years back. They opened a window of time about 2 years after warranty where they finally acknowledged it and replaced the screens.
I love apple products, I just wish that things like this were a priority for them now, instead of waiting a few years.

I still have this problem. Switched to a plug in keyboard to minimize bluetooth devices, still have issues with connectivity, the latest being unable to access the dropdown menu. None of the fixes work. It is extremely frustrating to shell out a lot of money for a M1 MacBook Pro to find out it can't even use official apple devices!
HI WormEapple - yes this is happening to me also - and I am too frustrated with it!!!!! Apple have possibly done an update and this is the result - another glitch in their software. I have had the issue with Mail, Finder and various Third Party software.
So the question is what is Apple going to do about it.

Not to pile on but I have this same issue as described by Rootus below in addition to having Bluetooth problems. Does Apple have a fix coming soon or is this just my life now?
I have reset the resolution and it still happens, less frequently but at least every 7-14 days.
I'll check if unticking "mirror displays" will make a difference.
It will…any change will for about a week. This is a Big Sur issue.
Same settings with my 32” AOC curved monitor. I’ve had the issue still albeit less frequently. Sadly though my monitor has a 85Hz refresh rate so it shouldn’t have to be reduced in order to work.
apparently Apple is quick to care if you mention the B word even though they don’t care enough to address the issue 🤦🏻♂️
