Issues with eGPU after upgrading to macOS Big Sur

Since upgrading to Big Sur, I have not been able to successfully eject/remove my eGPU. I'm using the following MacBook Pro + eGPU:

  • MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)
  • Razer Core X Chroma eGPU enclosure
  • Radeon RX 5700 XT graphics card

After the going through the process to disconnect the eGPU, the eGPU icon remains in the menu bar. If I click on the icon, I get the message "No removable GPU" (see screenshot).

If I then unplug go ahead with unplugging the Razer's thunderbolt cable, I get a warning message.

Although the eGPU seems to work OK once I reconnect it to my machine, not being able to remove it without triggering a warning is quite annoying.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

Hi there aspidis!

It sounds like you're having trouble ejecting your eCPU from your MacBook Pro. We'll be glad to give you some helpful tips, but first we have a few questions.

We see that you've mentioned getting an error after unplugging the Razer cable, but when you plug it back in is the eGPU showing in the menu bar or does the message "No removeable GPU" remain?

When you go to Apple menu > About This Mac > System Report, does the Mac recognize the eGPU there? If not, let's have you reset the SMC.

You can find steps on how to do so here: How to reset the SMC of your Mac

If the eGPU isn't recognized it after the reset, let's test this issue in safe mode. For steps on how to enter safe mode, look here: Start up your Mac in safe mode

Does the issue persist in safe mode?

Let us know.

Cheers!

I have a similar problem. Since upgrading to Big Sur, I have not been able to successfully eject/remove my eGPU. I'm using the following MacBook Pro + eGPU:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019 four ports)
  • Akitio Node Titan eGPU enclosure
  • Radeon RX 5700 XT graphics card

After the going through the process to disconnect the eGPU, the eGPU icon remains in the menu bar. If I click on the icon, I get the message "Disconnecting GPU" which never goes away. The monitor connected to the eGPU remains useable. If I disconnect the cable I get a warning when I reconnect.

I got this setup

  • 16" MBP 2019
  • Razer Core-X
  • Radeon RX Vega 64
  • One 4k monitor attached to the RX

With the latest version of Big Sur at least nothing happens when I select the "Disconnect AMD Radeon RX Vega 64" in the menu. With the previous version the system would crash and reboot. So the "safest" way to disconnect the eGPU was to just pull the plug… I really hope Apple fixes eGPU support in a future update right now (11.2.1) eGPU support is OK, but disconnecting still sucks and is unstable. There are a lot of people reporting exactly the same problem over at Reddit, I hope Apple can fix this soon.

Thank you. I've gone ahead and reset the SMC. So far, so good. If the issue reoccurs, I'l do some further tests.

There do seem to be some other bugs associated with eGPU support - for example, the force disconnect dialog modal remains open even once force disconnect is complete - but they do not seem to affect how the eGPU performs.
