macOS Big Sur messages no longer playing notification

The Messages application on my MacBook Pro is no longer playing a notification sound.

Messages->Preferences->Message received Sound is set (Aurora) and all the checkboxes are checked

System Preferences->Notifications->Messages->Allow Notifications is on, Play sound for notifications is checked

Any ideas? It's really annoying missing the audio alerts as I'm not seeing messages coming in!

If we understand your post correctly, you do not hear a notification sound when you receive a message on your MacBook Pro. We’d like to help.

Safe mode will tell us if the issue is related to a startup item or plugins, and sometimes corrects the issue.
