Marking messasges as read

Usually when I get a notification (and preview of first lines), either on the home page or the lock screen, that a new text message has arrived, I either swipe it up (on the home page) or choose the 'Clear' option (on the lock screen) to get rid of it. But even though I've responded to the notification, the message itself is still marked as 'Unread' in the messages app, forcing me to mark it as 'Read'. Is there a way to automatically mark messages as 'Read' once I've cleared their notification on the lock/home screen?
