all my desktop folders are gone. i cant put anything on the desktop. even new folders is grayed out. in the finder file menu. tried turning stacks on & off, have not been using icloud drive. important work form the last week not in time machine back up

this is an additional comment & update to the above: i also cant drag & drop anything to or from the desktop. in fact desktop does not show up in my sidebar. i tried trashing the finder plist, it didnt help. i relaunched the finder window & rebooted the compute- nothing changed. onyx & etre check found no major problems. at this point ive run out things to try. please help
