iPod Classic - Charging Issue

I have an iPod Classic 200 GB that I have had for probably 10 years and is still in excellent condition. I lost the charger cable more than a year ago & I have just recently replaced it.

However when I plug the iPod in, it says “Charging, please wait” but then it immediately goes blank and I get that message that says “Connect to power.”

The iPod was stored in a nightstand drawer and has no outer damage, it is just old.

Has anyone else run into this issue? If so, how did you fix it (IF you were able to fix it)? I am concerned that the iPod itself is no longer useable.
