Cardio Fitness not working on my Apple Watch Series 6 (or on my previous Series 5)

I have owned an Apple Watch (first series 5 and now series 6) since November of 2019. I frequently run or walk outdoors for much more than 20 minutes at a time and I always use the Apple Watch Workout app, selecting either Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run, accordingly. In 14 months of this outdoor activity (hundreds of runs and walks by now), I have only had Cardio Fitness data recorded ONCE (December 5th, 2019, and called VO2Max then). Before and since that random single entry, NO DATA has been recorded for VO2Max or Cardio Fitness. I compared the other workout parameters (exercise time, heart rate information, active calories) for that single workout that recorded a VO2Max entry with the data from my hundreds of other workouts but I don’t see any significant differences, other than the fact that VO2Max data was NOT RECORDED. When I traded my series 5 watch for a series 6 this past November 2020 I had hoped that this feature would start working, but nothing has changed (NO DATA for Cardio Fitness, aka VO2Max). I don’t normally take my phone with me with I exercise outdoors, but even when I do, NO DATA is recorded for this parameter. I have reset my Fitness Calibration Data several times in an effort to get this feature to work, but still NO DATA is ever recorded. What really has me confused is that it did work ONCE, but has not worked before or since that one day and I didn’t do anything different on that one day. Any ideas? Is this a know bug?

Hello, i had a same issue, no data source etc. so i did the following, 1. Made My current watch as priority source 2. Recalibrated my watch 3. ( standard setting on watch) i had by default power saving mode on, which resulted into no continuous heartbeat tracking but sporadic( which is used to calculate VO2max) i switched it off in Watch app dock> Settings> workout> power saving mode 4. Then 2 outdoor walking workouts of approx 40 min each and today after 2nd workout vo2 max appeared and data source got updated.

hope it will help!

Hi All. Apple called me today with an update, but it wasn’t actually an update. They told me that the engineers are still looking into this problem using the diagnostic information they obtained from me and they hope to have an answer soon. They also told me that there have been other users who have reported this same problem, so it isn’t just me. They assured me that everything I was doing to get this feature to work was correct (settings are correct, workouts meet the feature’s requirements, etc.) and acknowledged that the problem was on their end. The promised to call me back once they have an answer, but I plan to check in with them regularly if they haven’t already contacted me. I will post here once I actually get an answer to this problem.

Update guys, I rang Apple support yesterday and they had a look and had to send screen shots of the stuff in the fitness app, he sent me an email today to download software to the phone so they could have a look at it. Downloaded it and then went on a run and he rang me then straight after but before he rang me I checked the phone and cardio fitness is working. So he went on to my phone to take some logs and some pictures again and then deleted the earlier software. He is going to pass this on to Engineers. So fingers crossed that this is the end of it. Will be running tomorrow again and hope all is good.

I’m the original poster. In spite of making numerous recalibrations and subsequently structured 20 minute + outdoor walks and outdoor runs (on level surfaces at even pace), and making sure that all of the appropriate setting are set properly, and after trying ALL of the suggestions posted here (thanks everyone), and after working on several occasions with Apple Support (which acknowledged that there is a problem with this feature which causes some people to NOT get Cardio Fitness data), and after talking Apple Care into swapping my existing Series 6 watch for a new Series 6 watch at no expense to me, and after updating to the latest IOS for both the watch (7.4) and my iPhone 11 (14.5), I still am not getting any Cardio Fitness data (no data source showing for this feature). Knowing that others are experiencing the same unresolved issue and knowing that Apple Support has admitted that there is a known issue with this feature (that hopefully will be fixed in a future update), I am giving up on this feature ever working for me.

Bill636, I’ve been through the list with Apple Support a couple of times and I already had everything set properly, but (without going through this entire thread again) here’s what I remember:

  1. Must be outdoor activity (I have used both Outdoor Walk and Outdoor Run using Apple Watch Workouts);
  2. Phone Settings: Privacy, Motion & Fitness, Fitness Tracking “on” and Health “on”;
  3. Phone Settings: Privacy, Location Services “on” and Apple Watch Workout “while using the app” and Precise Location “on”;
  4. Phone Settings:: Privacy, System Services, Motion Calibration & Distance “on”;
  5. Watch Settings: Privacy, Heart Rate “on” and Fitness Tracking “on”;
  6. Watch Settings: Workout, Power Saving Mode “off”;

That’s all the relevant settings I can think of right now.

Plus, I have recalibrated fitness data numerous times over the past year and a half, always followed by at least two 20 minute + outdoor walks or runs that were done on flat terrain, non-stop, at a steady pace.

And, I have had three Apple Watches (one Series 5 and two Series 6) that were Reset (Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings) several times, and I have reset my iPhone 11 (erase all content and settings) several times too.

Still no Cardio Fitness data ever.

And, I worked with Apple Support on three occasions where they first went over the settings with me, then had me install diagnostic profiles on both the watch and phone, then had me log numerous 20 minute + outdoor walks and runs, then they retrieved the diagnostic information from my devices. I also sent them screen shots from the Apple Activity App that showed good HR and GPS data throughout the workouts and they confirmed that the data looked good. I haven’t heard anything more from them and don’t expect to. When I last spoke with them (2 months ago), they said this is a know issue that some users are experiencing and they were working on a solution.

But any suggestions you have that I haven’t mentioned here are more than welcome.

Hi! After calling apple support and they had me install profiles on my phone and watch for them to get data from me based on my workouts i was doing, they then told me to go on a 20 minute walk outside right after they installed these profiles... Then I went on the walk and they called me back that same night and was going to get the data from the profiles and have me send them screenshots of my summaries of my workouts, when I went to do this, I realized at this moment that cardio fitness recorded for that walk I just did! So now it is working. They still had me send the data and the workouts to them so I am still not sure why it wasn’t working before. But I had the same issue where it wasn’t recording it and did not even have my watch as a data source listed. I had several qualifying workouts too so it was strange that all of a sudden, it worked after I called them.

Best of luck to the rest of you!

I reported a similar issue to Apple, where when I do any type of Cardio fitness using the Apple Fitness + app it doesn't record or show progress on my rings, but if I use the other workouts it records just fine. After about a month of communication I was told that it will have to fixed with a software update in the future.

Recently though it is affecting other types of cardio where if I start the workout from the workout icon on the watch and do HIIT or if I select Dance or Outdoor walk it will record part of the workout and not the whole thing. Today I did an hour long workout, 28 minutes of running, and 30 minutes of yoga and it recorded 31 minutes of exercise. I am using a Series 5 watch that is up to date, and it is linked with an iPhone 11 Pro Max so I know it is supported.

I also have ever had it record my VO2Max one time since I got the watch in 2019 I think around mid October that year. It was just random that it recorded it too. I just have no data recorded in there since, even though I workout doing some type of cardio at least 4 times a week.

  1. You are spamming because you posted 5 messages just this evening in a short period. None with helpful info
  2. You only have to run on a flat surface for the 1st calibration run....you know....to calibrate it. After that run as many hills you want. I think you misunderstood them and think you can't run on hills for any runs....
  3. Apple do not gauge the severity of an issue by how many posts you post. They do it via Customer requests into support.
  4. Apple have already stated this is a known bug and are working for a fix. This is standard expectations for any tech/company device. If you are expectations are otherwise - they are warped.

Again please stop spamming - thanks!

Hi All. Long story short ... no answers from Apple yet, but they are working on it and I will post here when I hear something.

If you want the long story, here it is:

I have been working with Apple Support to find a solution to this problem since Wednesday last week. First they reviewed my watch and phone settings and agreed that all were set properly and we discussed my workout history and they agreed that I SHOULD be seeing VO2Max/Cardio Fitness data.

Next they performed a remote diagnostic on both my Series 6 watch and my iPhone 11 and said that everything appeared to be working properly. So, they had me load some diagnostic profiles onto both my watch and phone and then asked me to perform two outdoor workouts of at least 20 minutes (I did an outdoor walk for 22 minutes, rested for 3 minutes, then did a separate outdoor run for 22 minutes). They then remotely downloaded the diagnostic reports and I provided them with some screenshots of the individual exercises from the Activity app (along with some additional screenshots of other similar exercises).

They contacted me on Friday and said that the engineers wanted more data. So, we again loaded more diagnostic profiles on my phone and watch and over the course of this past weekend I logged a total of six more workouts for them (outdoor walks and outdoor runs, each in excess of 20 minutes). On Monday they accessed the diagnostic data and I provided them with screenshots of each of those six workouts. I was told to expect an answer by today.

But, I just got off the phone with my Apple Support agent who stated that he had NOT yet heard back from the engineers. He is hopeful that he will hear from them within the next two days and will call me when he has news. Hopefully they find a cause and solution for this problem.

Matt_SG, glad it is working for you (still broken for me). FYI, my most recent efforts to resolve this through Apple Support were due to Apple Support reaching out to me as a result of their seeing this thread. The support person who contacted me said that due to Apple Stores (Genius Bars) being closed do to the pandemic they are not hearing about issues like this as much as they normally would. So I encourage anyone still having problems getting Cardio Fitness to work (still not working for me) to call Apple Support and initiate a case/trouble ticket with them. Hopefully if they get enough cases generated this matter will be elevated even further and finally resolved. When I spoke with them last I pointed out that Cardio Fitness is an “advertised feature” of the Apple Watch so they should be doing everything they can to make sure the feature actually works ... for everyone.

Looks like I have discovered a solution to MY particular problem, not sure if this will apply to any others here.

It seems that the only time I DONT get cardio data is when I’ve gone out without iPhone and ended the workout before I get home and before the watch is in communication range of the phone.

If I carry iPhone with me or end workout when back inside house, no problem- I get cardio data.

Not sure if the setup is designed to operate this way, but I don’t think so. I reckon this is still a software design glitch, because all the other data is processed ok regardless of where the workout is ended.

63 year old woman here. I'm not able to get any Cardio Fitness readings - despite many long outdoor walks at a pace of 8.5 km/hr. The last technical support person I spoke to said that elevation could be a problem, so I've done some brisk walks on a track, and still nothing. The one other thing he mentioned was the fact that the colour of my route on the Map in the Fitness app should be predominately green, rather than yellow (which is definitely the predominate colour now), which means I need to get my heart rate higher. I'm wonder about the colour of the maps for people who are getting regular cardio fitness reports.
