Cardio Fitness not working on my Apple Watch Series 6 (or on my previous Series 5)

I have owned an Apple Watch (first series 5 and now series 6) since November of 2019. I frequently run or walk outdoors for much more than 20 minutes at a time and I always use the Apple Watch Workout app, selecting either Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run, accordingly. In 14 months of this outdoor activity (hundreds of runs and walks by now), I have only had Cardio Fitness data recorded ONCE (December 5th, 2019, and called VO2Max then). Before and since that random single entry, NO DATA has been recorded for VO2Max or Cardio Fitness. I compared the other workout parameters (exercise time, heart rate information, active calories) for that single workout that recorded a VO2Max entry with the data from my hundreds of other workouts but I don’t see any significant differences, other than the fact that VO2Max data was NOT RECORDED. When I traded my series 5 watch for a series 6 this past November 2020 I had hoped that this feature would start working, but nothing has changed (NO DATA for Cardio Fitness, aka VO2Max). I don’t normally take my phone with me with I exercise outdoors, but even when I do, NO DATA is recorded for this parameter. I have reset my Fitness Calibration Data several times in an effort to get this feature to work, but still NO DATA is ever recorded. What really has me confused is that it did work ONCE, but has not worked before or since that one day and I didn’t do anything different on that one day. Any ideas? Is this a know bug?

Hello, i had a same issue, no data source etc. so i did the following, 1. Made My current watch as priority source 2. Recalibrated my watch 3. ( standard setting on watch) i had by default power saving mode on, which resulted into no continuous heartbeat tracking but sporadic( which is used to calculate VO2max) i switched it off in Watch app dock> Settings> workout> power saving mode 4. Then 2 outdoor walking workouts of approx 40 min each and today after 2nd workout vo2 max appeared and data source got updated.

hope it will help!

I agree with all these posts I am extremely disappointed I bought an Apple Watch 6 for the first time in my life super excited for the cardio fitness feature especially in mind of going through the pandemic and this watch helping me to stay healthy and aware of my health status I tried calling Apple support I was shifted through many people I finally got a woman who insisted that the only way they could find out what was wrong was to download information to my phone which I did not want to do so since then even though I have sent her more information I’ve had no response from Apple. She tried to make me feel humiliated like I was so stupid and they were so smart I sent several screenshots of my workouts and yet their advertisement says that this cardio fitness will monitor your VO max even if you were just walking throughout the day your daily activities not needing to have a special workout . I feel this is faults advertising!!!😡😡 this is not worked from day one!!!😡 I’ve read through this whole thread and I’ve tried all the things suggested and nothing works so essentially this watch is a very expensive watch that doesn’t do anything that it’s supposed to do I’m going to see about sending it back or getting a new one.

I think you could be right to a point, I think I had my phone with me in January and all was good and I was using my Nike app. Yesterday I had my phone with me and used the Nike app on a 5 mile walk and it didn’t work. Tomorrow I’m going to use the Apple fitness app and bring my phone and I’ll see what happens but I have my doubts. At the end of the day it’s the watch that calculates your cardio fitness and I think Apple has ****** it up. I don’t know if I have a right to return the watch if this is not working but it’s the reason I bought it. Under EU law I may have a case as the watch as advertised isn’t working properly.

Series 4 with 12 mini. What good is the watch if it DOES NOT record Cardio Fitness / VO2 Max on any indoor exercise like stationary bike, stair stepper, high Intensity interval training, rowing machine, Treadmill, etc. These are all very good cardio health exercise regiments but the Apple does not record them in the Cardio Fitness / VO2 Max. All of these exercises are already programmed into the watch.

The Apple Watch, I am told by Apple support only records Cardio Fitness / VO2 Max when you are walking or running outdoors.

I am not sure this watch is for fitness tracking. I may need to look at alternatives.

About 1/2 days after I posted that my cardio fitness was not registering and the troubles that I’ve had, my watch completely turned black. The screen was black I could not reset it. it appeared that the watch was still onstill getting notifications, but I could not see anything so I called Apple support and I ended up having to send my watch to Apple Support for a repair. I hope they can figure out what is wrong with my screen and my cardio fitness. Honestly the only reason that I got this watch what is for the fitness and health aspect. 🥵

Can we try and keep the thread on focus and just post if you have information that helps solves the issue.

Posting complaints is not helping and just spamming everyone who is subscribed to this thread.

Additionally if you are upset at the watch - buy another one. But Apple clearly explain how Vo2 measurements work - and that it requires outdoor activities (because it measures pace). Its mentioned numerous times in their marketing/reviews/and on the phone itself.

Note - no health tracker on the market can accurately estimate Vo2 from indoors or on static devices - this is because the measurement is estimated via heart race and your pace to estimate oxygen intake.

How am I spaming. The watch they advertise is clearly not working and I’ve been putting up what Apple told me which is nonsense. If you think it’s ok that they tell you that you can’t run on a hill because the watch is not giving accurate info then I cant help you. I also know it’s only calibrated for out doors. The more people complain about it the better and then we wouldn’t need these forums. This Is my first time on any Apple forum and I’ve Apple products all my life.

I’m only replying to people because I get an email off somebody from the forum like yourself. Apple did not say it was a bug. They don’t know what it is. My watched worked perfectly like I said in early posts in January and nothing since the other day and they don’t know why it’s working now and to the further emails off them they are saying there is gaps in the heart monitor about running on hills. I didn’t run in any hills last week when the info was sent back to Apple. I think you might want to go away now and get a life and go and try annoy somebody else. Any further info I get I’ll gladly pass it on to anyone that emails me.

I’ve lost all trust in the watch. I still don’t know if it’s working properly because Apple Told me about issues with it and wanted to repeat the same logs and tests as the first time but they haven’t come back. Just back from a run and it’s still working but I don’t know ifs it’s right. Nobody should be going to any levels of switching this , switching that for it to work properly. Think I was more happy when running just with the phone. I’m a big fan of Apple, 3 iPhones ,Mac book air, Apple TV box in the house but it’s the watch that annoys me the most. This had to have shown up in testing.
