Cardio Fitness not working on my Apple Watch Series 6 (or on my previous Series 5)

I have owned an Apple Watch (first series 5 and now series 6) since November of 2019. I frequently run or walk outdoors for much more than 20 minutes at a time and I always use the Apple Watch Workout app, selecting either Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run, accordingly. In 14 months of this outdoor activity (hundreds of runs and walks by now), I have only had Cardio Fitness data recorded ONCE (December 5th, 2019, and called VO2Max then). Before and since that random single entry, NO DATA has been recorded for VO2Max or Cardio Fitness. I compared the other workout parameters (exercise time, heart rate information, active calories) for that single workout that recorded a VO2Max entry with the data from my hundreds of other workouts but I don’t see any significant differences, other than the fact that VO2Max data was NOT RECORDED. When I traded my series 5 watch for a series 6 this past November 2020 I had hoped that this feature would start working, but nothing has changed (NO DATA for Cardio Fitness, aka VO2Max). I don’t normally take my phone with me with I exercise outdoors, but even when I do, NO DATA is recorded for this parameter. I have reset my Fitness Calibration Data several times in an effort to get this feature to work, but still NO DATA is ever recorded. What really has me confused is that it did work ONCE, but has not worked before or since that one day and I didn’t do anything different on that one day. Any ideas? Is this a know bug?

Hello, i had a same issue, no data source etc. so i did the following, 1. Made My current watch as priority source 2. Recalibrated my watch 3. ( standard setting on watch) i had by default power saving mode on, which resulted into no continuous heartbeat tracking but sporadic( which is used to calculate VO2max) i switched it off in Watch app dock> Settings> workout> power saving mode 4. Then 2 outdoor walking workouts of approx 40 min each and today after 2nd workout vo2 max appeared and data source got updated.

hope it will help!

No I haven’t gotten it fixed. The issue has actually progressed. The problem has expanded to not recording my mixed cardio workouts too. I haven’t heard anything more from Apple either. Last thing I heard was engineering was looking into it, and it has been weeks and I haven’t heard anything else. So at this point it isn’t recording dance cardio, mixed cardio, and not recording my full hiit workouts too.

They have not got back to me either. At this stage I can’t be bothered any more. Back from a run today and my third run in 4 days, even though I covered the 5 miles in a way faster time and the 6 th mile going up the equivalent of 48 stories my v02 has dropped slightly. It is what it is I think. Seems to me Apple don’t want to know about it because they can’t fix it.

This blows.. I was looking deeper into my workout history in cardio fitness and it seems that it used to record my stationary-bike bike rides and outdoor rides as well back in Jan, but that stopped. And just to compare data, after yesterday’s workout I compared my BPM from health app to health mate (former cardio fitness source that I turned off) and health mate mate says “heart rate was not captured properly” so who knows if that’s even accurate. I’m seriously considering a Fitbit.

VO2/Health has never been able to record stationary exercises - its literally impossible as the formula to estimate the value has to include your 'pace' which is taken from your GPS data. You are mistaken if you think you got a result from your bike. Try and match the times and post screen shot otherwise.

Also if Vo2 is logging results its not Apples fault if your Vo2 is low - its just a formula based on data inputT

You can refer to the article link I posted earlier which explains the calculations.

Still very much interested in a screen shot from you showing the entry from Feb 15th was indeed from your watch and therefore during the stationary cycle...otherwise we can only assumed you have entered it in manually....

Just go to Show All Data - and into the entry for the 15th....

Oh! I just learned something new.. for those of y’all that like me didn’t know.. apparently, cardio fitness also takes in consideration any meds you might be on to gauge cardio fitness.. if this tool worked it’d be super cool to see what good looks like for folks like me on blood pressure meds.. I have some good Q’s for my doc on my next follow up..

yall be safe out there! And stay healthy

Exxxactly! Levels worse than someone I know that survived covid and is battling stage 4 cancer 🙏🏼.. **** near sent me into a panic attack (but that’s for a different thread). I don’t buy it either.. I don’t know how or why it recorded some stuff (past tense) and now it doesn’t, like my awesome hike today, or if the # is accurate.. but HEY APPLE! If you’re reading this, it’d be a nice tool to have, to help monitor or improve health and wellness..

have a good day honey bunches :-D

In December I had heart surgery. As soon as I got home I bought a brand new Apple Watch, and most of the apps are tracking my workouts and recovery. But I’m having the same problem as the rest of you with cardio fitness tracking. It has never worked on new Watch paired with an iPhone eight. I’ve talk to 6 Apple tech people. Every one of them had a different story. And the last one just told me to give up. Thanks to you all for staying on this. I’ll share if I ever get it working.

Thanks! I followed all suggestions this morning and walked 8 km for an average of 8'37"/km with an average heart rate of 118 bpm. The surface was mostly flat, and to be certain of that, I walked 7 times around a track in the middle of my walk. The map of my walk is still mostly yellow and the heart rate looks consistent. Unfortunately, still no data for a Cardio Fitness reading. I wonder if it's possible that my heart rate isn't getting high enough for the VO2 measure?

Thanks for sharing your success - however when I go to Health App, 'Data Sources and Access". I don't get EITHER of the two sources - 1) the health app. or 2)your apple watch. Says DATA Sources: None.

Surely Apple should be able to tell me how to set this up, but I'd appreciate help from any of you all.

Meanwhile, I am walking twice daily - at fast pace and for over an hour each time - and this is not "calibrating" anything.

Thanks.

I too have shared that the feature is not working on my brand new Apple Watch. (I bought it right after heart surgery.)

It is STILL not working. Even though I tried everything everyone has suggested.

I understand Apple makes lots of promises on many products and features - but I have not once gotten Apple people to admit there is a problem.

Thanks for your efforts, Bill. When I have time, I will try again to talk with Apple support.
