Why does RAM usage while using Final Cut Pro keep increasing to 40+ gb?

Up until today, Final Cut Pro was working quickly and was responsive. However, today while using the app, it became extremely unresponsive. Upon checking the activity monitor, it showed that FCP was using 40+ GB of memory. I tried deleting preferences which was a suggested solution; however, upon reopening FCP, the same issue occurred. I even tried closing all libraries and tasks and the memory usage kept increasing past 40 GB. Why does this happen and how do I fix this?
