Connecting two macbooks with a thunderbolt bridge

I just got a new macbook and I'm trying to connect it with my old one to transfer a bunch of files. I followed the steps here https://9to5mac.com/2016/11/22/macbook-pro-thunderbolt-3-bridge-network-video/ but I can't get it to assign itself an IP address. I'm not sure how to assign an IP address manually or even what numbers to us. If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can make it even simpler. Just put the old Mac into Target Disk Mode. This will make the old Mac appear as an external drive where you can access the data on the old laptop. If Filevault is enabled on the old laptop you may need to launch Disk Utility and manually mount the old laptop's drive to unlock it. You can then either use Migration Assistant or manually transfer your data over.
