Preview PDF transparency bug?

As far as I can tell there is some kind of problem with the PREVIEW app with some kinds of PDF file. Transparent layers in some kinds of PDF file just come out as SOLID BLACK. This doesn't happen with other PDF programs. It's been this way since Capitan so maybe it's something unrelated to the O/S?

If you've heard of this before what PDF files are affected?

How can I effectively replace the preview app? What do you recommend? Adobe seems heavy and slow.

You can alternatively use the current Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (not the Acrobat Pro) which Adobe is in a position to maintain its currency with the evolving PDF standard. Any PDF transparency should appear in Reader as it is intended.

Apple's Preview is an aging PDF reader that has PDF version, and implementation restrictions that may not be able to resolve every PDF that. you attempt to open in it. Acrobat Reader DC is the go to choice.
