New M1 Mac mini keyboard Lagging

So I've had my new M1 16g Mac mini for about 3 weeks now. a few days ago I noticed that when typing (whether it be google, safari, an email ect. the typing response/lag is horrendous. a few seconds. then all of a sudden all the letters will come out of nowhere. i tried turning off the keyboard and mouse and turning them back on. I tried restarting, I ended up completely shutting the computer down for a few minutes then starting back up and it fixed the issue for what seemed to be 12hours ..... I'm super P*ssed. does anyone have similar issues with the new M1's? do i need to send this thing back?

Yeahh, yesterday while I was chatting with Support a new Release came out:

macOS Big Sur‌ 11.2 improves Bluetooth reliability and fixes the following issues:

- External displays may show a black screen when connected to a ‌Mac mini‌ (‌M1‌, 2020) using an HDMI to DVI converter

- Edits to Apple ProRAW photos in the Photos app may not save

- ‌iCloud Drive‌ could turn off after disabling the ‌iCloud Drive‌ Desktop & Documents Folders option

- System Preferences may not unlock when entering your administrator password

- Globe key may not display the Emoji & Symbols pane when pressed

Let's all test it and report back, if it's still happening (I definitely had the Black Screen Problem, iCloud Drive and the Mouse stutters).

Is this a submitted, known issue yet? Cause it's horrendous. Latest update didn't do jack. Almost always happens when I wake from sleep or screen lock. Can be fixed by either a restart or plugging the keyboard in, unplugging it, and re-pairing it to bluetooth, which kinda makes the point of bluetooth unecessary.

Even worse is when you wake it up to type in your password that you can't see the characters, the laggy input leads to all sorts of crazy stuff, potentially locking you out.

Jerry,

I mentioned cycling the trackpad & I talked to Apple about it a few days ago, but the CS’s interest was tempered by the fact that I have a logitech keyboard. (It would be good if folks posted their input devices here too). I wonder if this is just a problem with the older Apple trackpads.

I would not hold your breath that new batteries will cure the problem; they haven’t for me. One thing to check when the keys are lagging is the Bluetooth devices’ signal level. Mine are usually about -51 dBm. What is rather interesting is that the trackpad seems to drop to -60 or so when the keyboard lags, though it returns to -51 or so after cycling it.

(Opt-shift-click on the menu BT ikon)

Also, in the “too early for conclusions” category, I have not had a problem for a few days—since I added a usb mouse on the side, but still use the trackpad. And no, I have no theory as to why this conceivably seems to work.

I've got the same issue on mine. Been very sporadic for 6 months now. Currently running Big Sur 11.4 and had the issue. I didn't know about the Shift + Option trick, so next time I'll give that a whirl. The only thing I've had work is rebooting the Mini. I'm using a 2012 battery powered keyboard and mouse. No issues with the mouse, just the keyboard. I do have 2 USB 3.0 drives plugged into a 3.0 USB Hub occupying one of the ports on the Mini and have tried relocating them, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

After several weeks of discussing this bluetooth connectivity issue with Apple Support (with no permanent solution), I've decided to try the suggestion on this web site. The suggestion is to install a utility called blueutil which supposedly will reset the Mac Mini's bluetooth module using a command line app. I then use a crontab job that will execute this utility (with command line arguments) to reset my bluetooth module at 2 am every morning. I'm hoping this hack will fix my keyboard issues at least until Apple can correct this issue in their OS. I'll report back here if this issue works or doesn't after running it for several days.

Have the same issue, been dealing with it for the last 6 months, official Apple bluetooth keyboard and mouse, keyboad just goes laggy and pretty much unresponsive every couple of days, only solution is to either plug it in or reboot the system which can be a pain depending on what im doing.

Its 2021 and a brand new computer shouldnt have issue with bluetooth connectivity especially to devices made by the same company.

Its just embarrasing.

I'm still having the issue with my Mac Mini M1 and my original Magic Mouse/Keyboard. The issue is definitely fixable by either resetting the BT connection, or by turning off the mouse and turning it back on.

The other thing I've noticed is that the batteries in both keyboard and mouse are draining about 1/month, where they used to last 6 months+ with my old iMac.

I've opened a ticked with Apple Support. Hopefully, they'll see there's a larger issue here.

I was having the issue of my keyboard being laggy and sometimes it would enter random characters when I type, but I fixed it by using a utility to reset my bluetooth module every morning at a specific time. I've been using this fix for the last few months and it's been working great (no more keyboard issues). You can read my previous postings for more details.

I currently have the keyboard lagging problem. It was so slow my online banking app locked me out for entering the wrong password 3 times. I'm using a new Apple Magic Keyboard w/numeric keypad (battery 79%) on a Mac Mini (M1, 2020) with Big Sur 11.6 with 16 GB memory. The only way I've found around the problem is a system restart and then it works fine for a few days.

I also have the second display going blank (along with an audible click) but I'll save that for another thread.
