iphone 12 pro max battery health degrading

I got my new 128GB 12 Pro Max with blue silicon case on the 11/13 launch day. In the weeks since I’ve noticed the battery health has already dropped to 98%. I’ve only used public releases of iOS and haven’t installed any iOS beta’s that would have enabled extra logging functions that could have negatively impacted battery life and health. Optimized charging has been enabled the whole time, and it’s only been charged with a USB-A cable and an Apple 5W charger. I don’t see any apps standing out as battery hogs, and I’m using my phone as much as I did my 11 Pro Max. I’m shocked to see the battery health drop below 100% in the first 6 weeks, and at this rate it will be below 90% by summer 2021. Has anyone else noticed their battery health has dropped below 100% on a 12 Pro Max?

It has nothing to do with chronological time. It is “80% is normal after 500 full charge cycles”. A full charge cycle is from 0 to 100% (or combinations that add up to 100% such as 20% to 70% twice). And you should never let it go to 0% intentionally; that WILL shorten the capacity of the battery if it happens frequently. Ideally, charge it when it gets to 20%, and charge it overnight, every night, with Optimized charging enabled.

Im starting to believe that the optimized charging may be the culprit, I wasn't using it on my 11 pro max and the capacity didn't fall as fast, I was using it on my 12 pro but after realizing that my phone also couldn't figure out the correct time to top off the battery I decided to disable it. After doing this I am now charging my phone fewer times a day. Did you also experience this?

my 12 pro battery is currently at 93% barely any gaming except clash Royale. Clash and Instagram are pretty much the only downloaded apps I use on the daily. Everything else is pretty much the standard iOS apps, that’s the part that troubles me.

Question do you use any MagSafe accessories? I have a few including the charger I used it predominantly when I first got my phone, but I stopped because for one the charge time was much longer but also because my phone would get extremely hot to the touch if I even used Instagram for maybe 10-15 minutes while charging. I mean really hot… I couldn’t help but think it was damaging to the battery.

I do have the clear MagSafe case and two mag pucks. I stopped using them as a main charger. Now they are on a vent clip in the car where cool air can hit ‘em.

I have two pucks and they get warm when phone is not in use & face down so the puck isn’t covered. That’s normal. Same with getting warm from lightweight apps all fine.

Mine got very hot while trying to have online gaming sessions. Some games like the Idle ones did fine, normal warmth.

They got hot to the point of a smell like burning electronics coming from the puck. I couldn’t hold the thing without it making my skin turn red from heat. Not the open fire type of heat more like an almost boiling bowl of soup. You can hold it for a moment but you want to set it down quickly.

I kinda prefer the car method because they aren’t huge and it’s very convenient taking it off or slapping it on. At home I stick with lightning cables though.

It’s kinda crazy with the few apps you use your battery health & life are getting hit hard. Like I’m using about 314 GB at this very moment. Loads of games, photos, movies and other apps I find useful.

Also barely using the phones and no gaming at all 12 max is 44% while 11 max is at 51%. Mostly similar use except I did watch like 24 minutes of a movie on the 11 and downloaded games on it. Should be about even use because I was on a phone call for 16 minutes on the 12.

Anyways some of us may have faulty hardware, I am still hopeful software updates would help a bit more. Maybe the battery health isn’t calibrated perfectly or apps aren’t optimized enough ya know? I have hopes.

I’ll probably end up contacting Apple support before warranty ends lol

already better than many of us, we suffer from 1% per week!!!. Though analytic app of apple claimed that the battery was normal in my case for 6 times, shop manager and manager of Apple store HK also commented that 1% per month was already a bit odd in their sense. SInce my case deteriorated to 1% per week without improvement, they finally replaced the battery.

No, it’s not normal. No any other phones from Apple have a drop of 1% per month (and more in many cases) except 12 Pro Max, including even iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12. These numbers are absolutely worst case scenario and shouldn’t be as common as it is. Anyone seen so many similar complaints from any other iPhone models?

They may not be considered bad in terms of Apple warranty. But this is definitely not the norm.

I haven’t looked at my battery capacity till This month.

i’ve been to the apple store numerous times and also have spoken to numerous “geniuses” on the phone or text. All say that this is normal. And their diagnostics say it’s normal.

well I visited them June 14 and my phone says 97% 4 days later it dropped to 96% and then a week later it dropped to 95%

I was willing to pay the $70 for a battery replacement. But they are out. And have to order. The other option was to send my phone in via mail. But that would leave me without a phone.

You can feel free to discuss or not with anyone you like.

I did not say "only Apple engineers can decide."

To clarify:

No one except Apple can decide whether your battery will be replaced for free or not.

By Apple I mean Apple Corporate policy or Apple Store Genius Bar management.

Notes:

  • The Genius Bar manager works for Apple and can decide to replace your battery even if not considered defective under corporate guidelines as a "good will" replacement if they so choose.
  • Regular Genius Bar employees cannot decide to replace your battery if it does not meet battery replacement guidelines without approval from the Genius Bar manager.
  • The Genius Bar manager does not work for Apple Engineering and does not have access to engineering data regarding defective rates, what is or isn't considered normal degradation based upon what the design engineers specified and how the Battery Health algorithm is coded to work, other than informational memos sent out to Apple Stores.
  • Apple Engineering employees have access to failure data and the details of the Battery Health algorithm… but can't decide on their own to replace your battery for free though their input helps drive corporate policies.

Mine seems to be accelerating. 10 days ago it was at 92% and today it’s 87%. I do not consider that normal. I have Apple care so I’m ok but here’s the reality. If my phone is at 87% of design capacity, what that means is the 100% charged icon in the top right indicator just means it’s 100% of now a lower 87% so I get much less charge time. Is my math wrong?

Personally I’m either going to wait till it gets to 80% and get it replaced or I may just get the 13 when it’s released.

Mine keeps dropping one percent a week and is now around 87%. It’s only had 96 charge cycles. I am beginning to think there’s something wrong with the motherboard because occasionally I see the display getting bright and then dim as if I had auto brightness turned on but I don’t and it’s a “flash as opposed to a gradual increase or decrease@. My wife has the 11 Pro which-had the update to recalibrate and hers is still reporting 100% on the Apple app and 102% On coconut battery.

The 12 either has a bad battery or a bad motherboard. I may just trade it in and get a 13 or I’ll use my Apple care when it goes to a point where I can’t stand it.
