iphone 12 pro max battery health degrading

I got my new 128GB 12 Pro Max with blue silicon case on the 11/13 launch day. In the weeks since I’ve noticed the battery health has already dropped to 98%. I’ve only used public releases of iOS and haven’t installed any iOS beta’s that would have enabled extra logging functions that could have negatively impacted battery life and health. Optimized charging has been enabled the whole time, and it’s only been charged with a USB-A cable and an Apple 5W charger. I don’t see any apps standing out as battery hogs, and I’m using my phone as much as I did my 11 Pro Max. I’m shocked to see the battery health drop below 100% in the first 6 weeks, and at this rate it will be below 90% by summer 2021. Has anyone else noticed their battery health has dropped below 100% on a 12 Pro Max?

It has nothing to do with chronological time. It is “80% is normal after 500 full charge cycles”. A full charge cycle is from 0 to 100% (or combinations that add up to 100% such as 20% to 70% twice). And you should never let it go to 0% intentionally; that WILL shorten the capacity of the battery if it happens frequently. Ideally, charge it when it gets to 20%, and charge it overnight, every night, with Optimized charging enabled.

No, these are user-to-user forums hosted by Apple. If you want to provide feedback to Apple:

I'm having the same problem also. 12 Pro Max...purchased 11-24-20. I've had a slight erratic battery drain from day 1 (off the charger, ranging from 3% to 17-18% overnight! No apps showed anything running) but I just assumed this was iOS, maybe update would fix it.

The first sign of a very odd issue came early March. Overnight drain of 100%, literally a full 100% charge to 0%, dead phone in 6 1/2 hours. Again, NOTHING showed anything running in background. Also this was the first time I noticed 99% Battery Health. Stunk...since previous XS Max seemed to take a long long time to hit 99%. Anyway Immediately scheduled a Genius Bar appt. I went a few days alter..earliest appt I could get with the Covid situation. It felt rushed due to these time constraints. Basic answer "no idea what caused it, battery looks fine. Restore the phone." I did.

Soon after this I've seen the same issues...no 100% overnight drain again, but still erratic performance. 1%-18% drain overnight. Phone may restart out of nowhere. Taking the phone out for a quick trip to the store, I may lose close to 20% battery charge in 45 min.! Also this battery health, I'm just watching this thing decline dramatically. This morning...Sat. another 1% gone --- a total of 2% drop since 6 days ago - Sunday, May 16.

2 days until I've owned this phone for exactly 6 months, Battery Health is now at 91%. **Looking at the Coconut Battery app and iMazing with far more details about my phone...that even showed a lower health of 89.3%. WITH ONLY 55 Battery Charge Cycles!

C'mon, to me, this is just absolutely not normal. To put it in perspective I guess...my 2 year, 2 month XS Max I traded that in with 95% health. My Apple Watch 4 I bought on launch day 2018 currently has 91% Battery Health!

I've had iPhones since day one in late June 2007, I have never had an iPhone with such buggy issues and such poor battery ever. I will contact Apple Support..no idea what they can do at this stage. I know Apple has some strict 80% battery before it can be replaced, but when if the battery itself is so flawed so soon it's messing up my phone.

It angered me too! But that wasn’t going to get my iPhone battery issue sorted (unless I paid for it - which weakens my legal case). I will carry on using my iPhone 12 Pro Max as I have used it with all my previous iPhones, I’ll continue to contact Apple Support and make appointments with Apple Genius Bar Teams until I get this issue battery sorted once and far all.

Looking at all the postings on this discussion group it really does look like there is a serious problem with the battery performance with iPhone 12 phones. Apple will have to eventually deal with this issue, it might take legal action to start the ball moving.

BTW, my iphone was 100% at start from early Dec, then stayed the same till March 2021. Then it keeps dropping . I just reached 93% today and charge cycles were 74 only. 1% drop for each 3 cycles .

never wireless or fast charge, no drain below 70%, Apple original iphone charger , no charging on car, 5h on screen per day.

tried the suggestions from apple if not charging during utilization at home , no charge overnight : this even kills the battery health faster .

Same time frame GGGG. Bought 12 Pro Max the day before Thanksgiving. Noticed the 99% Feb 24. (Then some crazy 100%-0% battery drain overnight on March 2 - Apple Genius Bar could not explain it - but stated "battery, phone was 'normal'" [smh]).

2 days after THAT visit, health was 98%! It's been a steady health decline since.

57 cycles as of today, (Battery maker / date - Desay Corp. / 10-5-2020) *if that makes a difference.

(I've seen batteries made by Haupu that is declining at same fast rate)

I WAS using a Belkin QI charger 5W wired in my car. I did switch to MagSafe though...figured this could be the culprit. But again like you, I've see others that have been charging this with classic low wattage, only wired and are suffering the same decline.

I’ve got my 12 pro max 256gb last december 2020, and up to now, my battery health is still 100%

That means that your phone has a battery whose capacity is greater than the standard (3687 MaH), and it will stay at 100% until its capacity drops below 3687 MaH. If the gauge went above 100% it would show that (110%? 105%?), but Apple has chosen not to do that.

Mine dropped from 96% on April 30th to now 92% on May 30th. In reading on the internet (not an official Apple source) there were discussions about Apple possibly changing the battery technology on the iPhone 12 and the reality may be that this is a change from all previous iPhones and this is now the new normal.

I wonder if this new normal means that this "hinted at different battery technology change" means this is all we can expect going forward is the performance we are seeing.

I have Apple care and will be soon replacing the battery if it continues to drop in this manner. :)

So everyone stating that this is normal could be viewed as a true statement based on a newer battery technology and we simply have to deal with it going forward.

my phone was purchased at 12 pro max launch and i was on my home WiFi, i also keep 5G turned off. more so when im home on my wifi i turn my cellular data off completely. my phone got hot just browsing the net nothing else and it zapped my battery from 85 to 76% in a span of 10-15 mins. as for my battery health my phone was at 98% at the end of April. so that's a 4% drop in just may alone.

Since I started chatting on this forum, my battery went into the state of 1% health drop for 4charging cycles and 10-14days. The latest health is 92% today. It was 93% on 27/5. Just as the staff and manager + senior manager at APPKE said, it would continue to drop in this rate once it has started. They admitted that it was abnormal if healthy dropped by 1% in even 3weeks, not to say 1-2W. I could either wait till 80% or try to find the senior manager again in weeks if it really dropped by several % in these weeks, then they would try find a way to solve this without asking me to pay for the new battery.

It’s been almost a month since I noticed a drop in battery health. Currently sitting at 92% 06/15/2021 on the blue 12 Pro Max 512GB model.

I haven’t noticed the battery health drop directly causing a decrease in battery life throughout the day. But I will say my battery doesn’t last a full day without charging periodically in my case.

I am rough on it I realize. 50-100% brightness, well it’s daytime so that’s expected. I’m always doing things on the phone, obviously that’s going to use battery power. Etc etc etc… normal usage stuff but the gaming does take its toll on the battery.

I turned off a bunch of background apps, turned off most tracking options and a bunch of other settings. Even a bunch of notifications are off. I did that so I could run 5G as “on” and expect a decent days battery life. Mostly I am connected to WiFi though. I tried with 5G auto and on settings both are comparable to me.

Either way my usage doesn’t allow the battery to last a full day, in an 8 hour period I could easily drop this to 30% or lower.

I still have the 11 pro max which was used daily just like I’m using the 12 pro max. Along with normal activities I used the 11 pro max for long gaming sessions (30+ minutes). Battery health states 97% and in general battery life lasts longer than my 12 pro max while doing the same activities.

This is in my case of course everyone will have different experiences. The scores on Geekbench are better and overall performance is better than the 11 pro max. I am however concerned about getting newer iPhones now. Mainly because I don’t want to pay to replace batteries every year right after the standard warranty ends. Just my experience so far, I do enjoy the phone as a whole though.

Screen shot taken 2:29pm 06/15/2021. Optimized battery is off because it couldn’t figure out when I needed it to be at 100% so it was charging normally anyways.
