Spotlight indexing errors, faults and malfunctions

After migrating from a 2017 iMac to 2020 iMac (both running Big Sur), the spotlight indexing function is not working for all folders. E.g., finder searches under specific folders produce no results. Per https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201716; I initiated a spotlight index rebuild for the suspect folders. Two questions: (1) how can I determine when the index rebuild is complete and (2) how can I determine whether other folder indexing is faulty? Do I need to rebuild the entire hard drive index to be sure? If so, how long will that take and are there any risks in undertaking? Assume: 700 GB of data on SSD, 32 GB RAM, 3.8 GHz 8 core i7
