apple superdrive doesn't work

Trying to use the apple superdrive with the newer MacBooks but it gives an error that it "needs power" no matter what kind of usb/usbc adapter we use. Is it useless now?

MacBook, OS X 10.11

Hi CherM,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that your MacBook is indicating that your Apple SuperDrive needs more power.

Trying multiple connections was a great step to take. We would recommend the troubleshooting from If a Mac accessory needs more power or is using too much power.

Next, since the SMC controls power, we recommend resetting that as well. Check out How to reset the SMC of your Mac for details about how to complete that process.

Take care.
