iPhone 12 Pro: Apple logo flashes not steady when doing a restart???

Yes my device is a brand new iPhone 12 Pro. The recent iPhones are not yet on the hardware list for anyone starting a question.

With my old iPhone X, to do a full reset I press briefly Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold Power until the Apple logo appears. That logo stays on during most of the restart (under a minute)

With new iPhone 12 Pro, same procedure leads to a momentary bright flash of the Apple logo rather than a steady logo. If I release the power button at that point, the screen stays black for a few seconds then the logo comes on for a few seconds, and the home screen returns. The phone has certainly restarted and may have done a full reset as intended. As expected after a restart, I have to re-enter my PIN to turn on FaceID.

Quite likely this is the new normal, with restart faster on the faster new phone. But it would be nice to know if that is the case, or if instead I have a problem with my new phone. I am encountering problems trying to do encrypted full backup to my Mac, and there is always the chance that my phone is defective.

I did try holding the power button longer after the logo flash. That had the same effect as holding it for a long time with the old phone: I was asked if I wanted to do a full restore rather than just a restart. But the logo did not come on and stay on at any time while the power button was being held.

Yes, it’s a bug in the startup procedure; the logo should stay on until the phone restarts, but it goes off, then comes back on. If you release the side button when the logo first flashes the phone will restart normally in about 15 seconds; it’s just a cosmetic bug. Rumor has it that iOS 14.5 will fix it.

BTW, that isn’t the best way to restart the phone, as it kills all processes without giving them a chance to save their local data. Usually this won’t be a problem, but occasionally it can result in recently updated data loss. The better way is to hold Volume Up and the Side button until Slide to Power Off appears, and do so. Then wait about 30 seconds, and hold the Side button to restart the phone. This procedure DOES notify all of the apps that they should save data before the phone shuts down; that’s why you wait 30 seconds for that process to complete.

Just got off the phone with Apple and the case and diagnostic logs have been received by the senior engineers. I made them aware that this is a worldwide issue and have given them the links to the assorted threads regarding this issue here on Apple communities as well as on Mac Rumors. I have a callback from them scheduled for Friday. They need a few days to research the issues myself and others have noted here. I will report back with an update once I speak to them on Friday and see what they have come up with to that point. Once an issue goes from senior support up to the senior engineers it can take awhile as they do dig deeply, often requiring different logs than what were initially sent so now it’s just a wait and see situation. Have a great day y’all!

There are people who have other problems, but most likely they would have had those problems regardless of whether the logo flashed or not. Most of the people who responded in another, very long thread said that if the released the side button when the logo flashed that their phones started and worked normally. Some users kept pressing the side button repeatedly, which could cause issues, but even most of them said their phones started and worked normally.

You seem very careful and conscientious in your phone’s management.

Yes, my iphone 12 pro max is now on 14.4.1 and it still has the flashing logo upon startup. My problem is that I'm also experiencing other quirky and not-so-subtle glitches, such as not being able to disconnect from a phone call. I literally have a green phone button & when you hit the button, nothing happens. I wonder if these kinds of issues are all related. Does anyone else have multiple problems? In the first few days of having the phone, everyone I called had a crackling connection & it turned out to be a faulty sim card. Apparently, that happens a lot.

Thanks for that.

I am still curious to know whether is is normal for an iPhone 12 Pro to show an Apple logo during force restart like every previous iPhone I have owned, or whether it is now normal for the logo to flash for a small fraction of a second then the screen is black until the home screen appears.

I am able to make an encrypted backup to my Mac using Backup Now. However I do not seem to be able to select the option of normally backing up (with encryption) to my Mac rather than to iCloud. This could have something to do with the fact that my faithful MacBook Pro 2012 is not supported for Big Sur and thus I am still on Catalina.

I guess I will be on Catalina for a long time, because there is no current Mac with the useful set of ports present on my Mac. And before long there will probably be no MacBook Pro that can run Windows in a VM.

Al Q,

Thanks for all the details you've provided. Sounds like things are working the way you'd expect when performing an unencrypted backup to your Mac, but not when encryption is enabled. We're also happy to hear you're still getting your encrypted backups manually to your Mac or when backing up to iCloud.

To further determine whether this is expected behavior or not though regarding automatic encrypted backups upon connection your Mac, it'd be best to reach out to Apple Support. They can be contacted using this link: Get Support

Have a great day!

Interesting and reasonable observation. Any idea how / if we can raise this issue to get Apple's attention? Unless they are aware and acknowledge this to be an issue, it is not going to be looked at. And while it is not posing a problem at the moment once the device is up and running, I am concerned there will be other implication down the road. Or am I overly paranoid?

Both my wife and I have logged this issue with Apple Support under separate cases but both reps do not seem to be aware of many reported instances.

Ok, so perhaps you can explain why the iPhone 12 (Pro, Pro Max, Mini or just 12) that were delivered prior to January don't show this on boot up? There is a pattern that's worth investigating; whether Apple says it's a non-issue in due course remains to be seen.

And I respectfully disagree that the related issues are "usually due to configuration issues on the phone itself"; I've seen them occur phones that have been completely refreshed, set up as new, with zero data ported from another device.
