Logic Pro, Scarlett 2i2 and Yamaha Keyboard

Hello friends!

I have a Yamaha keyboard that doesn't have a midi output. Therefore, I purchased the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and connected my keyboard to it. The Scarlett 2i2 is connected to the computer via USB. I can record whatever I play on the piano but I'm aware that this is not a midi track, but an audio (stereo) track.

Is it possible to play something on the keyboard, record it in Logic Pro (via the Scarlett 2i2) and choose another instrument (such as violin, cello, drums, etc) or do I need a Midi keyboard for this?

You do indeed need a midi keyboard for that.

That Yamaha doesn't even have standard midi out (5-prong DIN sockets?). Must be very old or very cheap then.

You have to connect the midi out port from a keyboard (with midi out) to the 2i2 midi in port. Then it will work likw a charm and you can play anything.

It is a Yamaha P-35B, bought 6 years ago. I bought it not to create digital music, but so I could have a decent piano to move to different places with me. Now that I'm interested in creating digital music, I was hoping that I could use it for that...

Well, that does have a MIDI out (and in) so if you connect its MIDI out to the Focusrites' MIDI in (using a MIDI 5 pronged DIN cable), as Thyss correctly said, you should be able to use the keys and the sustain pedal and record that as MIDI...

You're right! I'm sorry for the confusion.. My keyboard does have a MIDI "In" and "Out" inputs. But the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 doesn't have any MIDI inputs. I think the best way is to connect the keyboard to the computer using a MIDI to USB cable?

Well, she clearly states that it doesn't have s midi output, so that might not quite work like the charm you envisioned there... Some very cheap keyboards do not have any midi connectivity...
