MacBook Pro suddenly stopped internet sharing from Ethernet to WiFi

Hello all

My first post here despite being a Mac user for 20 years. I still class myself as a novice so please be kind if technical terms are not 100% correct...

I am facing the dreaded ‘self-assigned IP address’ issue that is stopping my MacBook from sharing an Ethernet internet connection that works perfectly well, to WiFi. I have been using this set up without any issues for 1 year+ but it has ceased to work as of yesterday and I cannot seem to find a way to get the MacBook internet sharing to WiFi again.

I have tried all the usual fixes, restarting routers, deleting various System Utility files and rebooting MacBook and iPhones that would receive the WiFi signal but nothing has worked.

The Ethernet connection is strong and works perfectly, the issue is that for some reason internet sharing has stopped working because WiFi is not longer able to find an IP address.

Any help on solving this one would be massively appreciated!

Hey there!

Thanks for updating us and for sharing these additional details. Were you able to test this issue in safe mode? If so, did you notice any change in this behavior?

You did mention that you're experiencing issues with your Mac not getting a self assigned IP address. You can attempt to manually change this. We do have a helpful resource that can show you how to do this and how to resolve IP address issues:

Use DHCP or a manual IP address on Mac

Hi

Many thanks for your reply.

The guide you sent via the link is really just the steps you need to take to turn internet sharing on. I had done this prior to this issue and it worked perfect tly for a year or more. Then suddenly it stopped working.

I have tried resetting all the hardware, changing cables, refreshing the settings, and deleting various system utility files but the problem remains - the hotspot will not work because the Mac is still not getting an IP address (or is self assigned).

This seems like such a simple problem but it has me - and the rest of the internet it seems - completely stumped.
