I purchased a USB-A / USB-C external DVD Drive. When I plug it in, it gets power. The light turns on. However, it does not show up on my Mac Mini. I have tried both connections and then also tried it through a USB-C hub. Why doesn't it let me connect to it?
It won't show in Finder unless there is a disc (with data) in the drive. Does it show in the USB section of System Information (Option-click the at the top-left of screen)?
You can add Eject to the menu bar and see if it shows when you click it.

Optical drives with no power supply don't work well with Macs. The Mac Superdrive is an exception because the Mac recognizes it and boosts power on its USB port.
Tray loading drives are more reliable.
Go to > Apple > System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.

I am seeing now that even though it states it is Mac compatible, Amazon customers are saying that it does not work with Mac Minis.
There was a disc in the drive.
It is not listed on the System Information.
I have already sent a request to the manufacturer over a week ago and they have not responded.
I am to the point where I am going to return it, but I wanted to get some feedback before I requested the return.
Contact seller/manufacturer.
I forgot to mention that the DVD Drive works on my windows laptop.

FWIW I have several LG CD/DVD drives that work just fine with all of my Mac’s.

You tried it on USB 3.0 instead of the USB-C or vise-versa?
I tried both the USB-C and the USB-A ports on the Mini itself, and I tried the USB 3.0 ports on the USB-C hub that I have.
A light turns on, on the DVD Drive, but nothing happens on the the Mac Mini.
