Thunderbolt Splitter

I need to hook my mac up to three other screens (not apple), I bought a thunderbolt splitter to connect the HDMI cords, and when I plug them in solo to the thunderbolt port they work but when I try to use the splitter the two screens don't work. Has anyone else had this problem and found the solution? Thanks!
