Apple logo flash at startup

New iPhone 12 Pro. At startup the Apple logo flashes super bright for a brief second then the screen goes dark for about 10 seconds before the Apple Logo re appears at normal brightness to finish the startup. I’ve had iPhones for years and never had the logo turn on and then off during startup. Is that Normal for the 12?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

After more than two weeks, I think that it is time to sum up the situation: the "flashing Apple logo" issue described by Blue-per does not occur when we unbox and boot the iPhone 12 (mini)/12 Pro (Max) for the first time, it occurs when the iPhone is already set up.

In most cases the phone performs normally after it boots up. Some users found hardware problems when using their new iPhone (phone needing to be connected to power in order to boot up, screen burn-in, battery charges very slowly, camera not taking HDR photos, etc.).

In my opinion those problems are not related with the flashing logo at startup, because they are very different from each other and they are isolated cases. They are just coincidences.

That does not mean that the flashing logo is not an issue: there are iPhone 12/12 Pro which boots with the (classic) steady Apple logo and some iPhone 12/12 Pro that do not, so it is obviously not a normal thing. It is not a "new feature" or "expected behavior".

After reading other answers on the forum, we can deduce that the issue does not occur on iPhone 12/12 Pro that were shipped with iOS 14.1 or with iOS 14.2 pre-installed, it (mainly) occurs on iPhone 12/12 Pro shipped in January with iOS 14.3 pre-installed. As a matter of fact a lot of people returned the device during the last weeks and got a new one with the same problem.

Now, we suppose (and hope) that the issue is part of iOS 14.3 and not in the hardware of the phone. In this case Apple should be able to fix it with an update, maybe already with a sub-dot-release (iOS 14.4.X) or later with iOS 14.5. There are some comments in favor of that supposition too, where people noticed that issue after updating from iOS 14.2 to iOS 14.3.

On the other hand, it is strange that (most) iPhones who updated the operating system from 14.2 to 14.3 did not experience the issue. And it is even stranger that I read a reply from a user who encountered the problem already on iOS 14.2. Those facts contradict our supposition above, and maybe the flashing logo has nothing to do with iOS 14.3.

I am sure a lot of people have this problem too; they do not notice it, because nowadays we do not shutdown and restart our phones very often. And even if they do that, they (probably) don't keep looking at the boot screen for issues.

It is very hard for us to guess if it is a software or a hardware problem. Only Apple can give us an official answer, and in order to solve the problem as soon as possible I ask you to continue upvoting this and other similar posts (clicking on "I have this question too"), commenting if you have some news from Apple and reporting the case to the Apple Support.

Mine initially started with my phone freezing up while playing a movie. When I rebooted the phone is when I noticed the flashing logo. And, although I may have bad aim when I try to hit buttons, some seem to be harder to select than others.

I did talk to a tech rep on the phone. He checked the hardware remotely and said it was ok. We made me an appointment at the Apple Store where they checked the hardware again and said it checked out fine.

The first tech rep suggested it was a software problem. The in store tech didn’t mention software.

Some people have indicated the next update will fix the problem. So I’m waiting for the next update.

About three weeks ago, I received my 256GB iPhone 12 Pro. Unfortunately, I have the same problem, and because of the Corona pandemic, I can't go to an Apple dealer to investigate. After researching, I found that many users in Germany have the same problem and because of their trust in Apple, they are eagerly waiting for Apple to fix the problem and respond.

I received my new iphone 12 pro max on 02/06/2021 with ios 14.3 installed, and have the same issue described by others. When i turn off the iphone and then turn it back on, the apple logo flashes brightly for a half second, but the phone doesn't appear to turn on...then does after some seconds. i didn't even realize that if i kept waiting it would ultimately turn on until i read palm0x's detailed post...i just kept trying to turn it on over and over again and just kept getting the logo flash, until ultimately, the phone would turn on.

it is a bit disconcerting since i haven't experienced this before with previous iphones...and since this phone is by no means cheap... it would be great if Apple would address this...it appears to be a common issue...i would like to know that this thing isn't going to die on my in a few months...

Hi, Same problem!

When I bought my iphone 12 pro initially all was well on the first boot, but later that day I turned it off and on again and I was horrified to see a blank screen with no logo, it wouldn't start. Then after pressing the side button again I saw the apple logo briefly flash and disappear and after about 10 seconds of darkness it loaded. The phone works perfectly fine afterwards and after hearing that it could be a software update problem on the 14.4, I decided to wait and see if the 14.5 fixes the issue. This happens every time I turn it off and on again. On the surface it seems like a small problem, but it is REALLY annoying to feel that you have paid for quality and the first thing you see is a glitch!!! Apple PLEASE fix this, I just hope that it is not the tip of the ice burg to something menacing. Sometimes I have to press the side button twice and hold it (praying nothing goes wrong), at first I thought it might be the leather case not letting the button work properly, but after using it without the case I realised the same problem exists. This is definitely affecting user experience and giving the user a sense of insecurity and it is really annoying. I'm trying to bear with it, I hope apple takes these things seriously, customers buy apple for flawless quality, there shouldn't be any 'glitches', not for apple!

I got a new iPhone 12 Pro just recently & the flashing of apple logo occurred when switch on, power went off. Reported to apple store & got a technician report of such. Got a new replacement. All is well but 2 days later, the apple logo flashing occurs again when switch on, this time it went off for a couple of seconds, the apple logo reappears and the iPhone start up as normal. Not pleasant at all of this problem - what’s happening Apple ???

My Samsung n Huawei user friends asked me about my IPhone 12 Pro Max experience . Idk whether to tell the truth or to lie. Haha

but to give credit where it’s due, I know Apple flagship store also face hardship in giving answers to this situation. I brought mine twice to the store. They did mentioned the engineers knew about this n are working on it and that it could be hardware issue and if that’s the case , a replacement maybe down the line .

again, different staff will advise slightly differently answer.

I’ve had iPhones all my life and even the iPhone 11 and this is the first time that this happened to me. I went in for an upgrade for the iPhone 12, got the phone switched it on and got that flashing apple logo. I did a software update and it is still there. I took the phone in, they gave me a brand new phone, switched it on and it does the exact same thing. Took the phone back and got a new phone again and guess what, the new phone does exactly the same thing. I tried a hard reset nothing happened. So now I don’t know what to do. I had 3 phones that does exactly the same thing. So what now ??????????

I just got an iPhone 12 with 14.1 and it booted just fine. I then proceeded to updated to 14.4 and is now facing this issue.

My case however is much severe as the device will not turn on after the blinks. I have encountered an instance that it refused to start up even after doing the power button hold for 6 times. Will probably have this one service/returned.

I continue be amazed at how upset people are getting about a 100% harmless cosmetic issue.

There is literally nothing functional that does not work or is in any way affected by this issue.

If that's enough to cause you to return your phone, that's your choice of course and is why Apple has a 14 day return policy.

Handy hint: boot your phone once, don't shut it off - the only time I see the boot logo on mine is when applying an iOS update.

You won't ever see the "issue" again.

Yep. Mine even had a normal boot up (no blink) after the restore during setup which should rule out any issue with restoring from backup as a means to setting up the phone . The “blink” began a week after restore for no apparent reason and it began after several normal “blink free” restarts (phone turned off once in order to apply a screen protector and once just to check whether the blink had started again but it had NOT). I turned the phone off the last time because the touchscreen had become intermittently less responsive and apps were freezing — upon restart the blink had returned.

Logically speaking, it must be more than a “normal boot up” issue as it doesn’t happen on all iPhones (or even on all iPhone 12’s — my son who purchased his 12 on launch day, did a restore from backup to set it up, and has updated right up through the last iOS update and has NEVER had the issue EVER), and for some like me it happens randomly at some point after the phone has booted with the normal boot up (solid apple logo on startup) for a period of time and then begins blinking at a later date. Are we to assume then that the engineers forgot to “block the blink” during reboot/startup on only certain iPhones? That just doesn’t seem a rational line of thought to me, so I feel there must be another answer.
