Apple logo flash at startup

New iPhone 12 Pro. At startup the Apple logo flashes super bright for a brief second then the screen goes dark for about 10 seconds before the Apple Logo re appears at normal brightness to finish the startup. I’ve had iPhones for years and never had the logo turn on and then off during startup. Is that Normal for the 12?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

After more than two weeks, I think that it is time to sum up the situation: the "flashing Apple logo" issue described by Blue-per does not occur when we unbox and boot the iPhone 12 (mini)/12 Pro (Max) for the first time, it occurs when the iPhone is already set up.

In most cases the phone performs normally after it boots up. Some users found hardware problems when using their new iPhone (phone needing to be connected to power in order to boot up, screen burn-in, battery charges very slowly, camera not taking HDR photos, etc.).

In my opinion those problems are not related with the flashing logo at startup, because they are very different from each other and they are isolated cases. They are just coincidences.

That does not mean that the flashing logo is not an issue: there are iPhone 12/12 Pro which boots with the (classic) steady Apple logo and some iPhone 12/12 Pro that do not, so it is obviously not a normal thing. It is not a "new feature" or "expected behavior".

After reading other answers on the forum, we can deduce that the issue does not occur on iPhone 12/12 Pro that were shipped with iOS 14.1 or with iOS 14.2 pre-installed, it (mainly) occurs on iPhone 12/12 Pro shipped in January with iOS 14.3 pre-installed. As a matter of fact a lot of people returned the device during the last weeks and got a new one with the same problem.

Now, we suppose (and hope) that the issue is part of iOS 14.3 and not in the hardware of the phone. In this case Apple should be able to fix it with an update, maybe already with a sub-dot-release (iOS 14.4.X) or later with iOS 14.5. There are some comments in favor of that supposition too, where people noticed that issue after updating from iOS 14.2 to iOS 14.3.

On the other hand, it is strange that (most) iPhones who updated the operating system from 14.2 to 14.3 did not experience the issue. And it is even stranger that I read a reply from a user who encountered the problem already on iOS 14.2. Those facts contradict our supposition above, and maybe the flashing logo has nothing to do with iOS 14.3.

I am sure a lot of people have this problem too; they do not notice it, because nowadays we do not shutdown and restart our phones very often. And even if they do that, they (probably) don't keep looking at the boot screen for issues.

It is very hard for us to guess if it is a software or a hardware problem. Only Apple can give us an official answer, and in order to solve the problem as soon as possible I ask you to continue upvoting this and other similar posts (clicking on "I have this question too"), commenting if you have some news from Apple and reporting the case to the Apple Support.

Or does it? As I stated in an earlier post, since the blink has begun my touchscreen has periods of decreased responsiveness and apps that were working fine are now freezing occasionally. Are these issues related to the blink? I think it is possible that they may be all interrelated as they all began happening at the same time. Prior to the blink my touchscreen and apps behaved normally — since the blink began they don’t. But, there’s no way to be sure whether the issues are related as apple has yet to release an official explanation for the cause of the blink. Is there more than one issue at play here — perhaps. Is the startup blink only cosmetic— perhaps not. Until apple finds the cause of the blink we will not know for sure if other issues are related or if a gradual degradation of the phone operation may occur over time. Respectfully, I just feel that it might be foolhardy to dismiss a behavior that appears to be outside the normal operation of the phone (as evidenced by the fact that not all iphones exhibit the behavior. In fact, not even all iPhone 12 exhibit the behavior) until the cause of said behavior is definitively diagnosed.

I have a brand new 12 Pro Max 128gb. I purchased a 12 pro but exchanged it after noticing a defect on the screen. Pro max was purchased on 2-11. I have been shutting phone off at night and noticed the Apple logo flashes and goes off and I normally hold the power button again and it comes on fine the second time. I bought my wife a Gold 12 pro and it does not have this issue. It flashes Apple logo and comes on the first time but her phone is several months older than my pro max.

The iPhones that are on display at stores/wireless carriers are very likely original models from the time of the iPhone 12 launch. It appears, from all the info I’ve seen here and elsewhere, that iPhone 12 models that shipped with iOS 14.2 and lower preinstalled and had a manufacture date prior to mid December 2020 do not exhibit the apple logo flash at startup and do not develop it even with updating to the most current iOS version.

I promise that I will definitely post again once I have something more definitive from the upper level engineer. I’m not sure how long it may take them to work through things though as they can get pretty in depth with their data collection and troubleshooting. At the very least, if they deem this as “normal” behavior they should be able to offer an answer as to why it only affects a particular cross section of the 12’s and not all of them since the 12’s that were produced earlier do not show this behavior even after upgrading to iOS 14.4.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 12 Pro Max with iOS 14.4. It didn't appear at the first boot that started the setup agent, but now after the initial setup I can't get rid of it.

However, apart from that, it seems to work normally after the boot.

My other iPhone (iPhone 12 Pro without Max) doesn't have this problem, however, this was initially set up with iOS 14.0. The Pro Max was set up from 14.3.

Had the same issue, with 3 iphone 12 pro's, at the end i just gave up, and went back to using my iphone Xs, as no one from apple could explain me what was the issue, and if i should be worried about it, however they were more than happy to exchange the phone. I did origibally order 12pro max for xmas, as a little treat to myself, and that had no issues whatsoever, it was just too big for me hence why i went for the 12 pro at the end.

But now it's almost March, and i think i will just wait for the next iphone, instead of trying to get another 12pro and hoping that this one will work as it should.

I too have the same thing going on & my hubby, I have the Silver 128gb iPhone 12 Pro Max & He has the Graphite 128gb iPhone Pro Max. I actually had to order mine through T-Mobile because they didn’t have anymore in this color. I believe it was in late December or mid January when I purchased & received it. I felt it was defective because of this than I thought it must be something new now. But the phone works, i am just still iffy about it.

As I got information from apple support team, the issue still under investigation and exchange the iPhone is the not solution as of now because same problem can appear again. So the suggestion from apple is to wait until apple technical team finalize the investigation.

The question is , if issue is software, why it’s appearing just the iPhones which produced after week 51?

After all, with so much discussion in the community about this blink of an apple, what conclusion have we all come to with this device? I have read all 32 pages of the community about this problem and there is no specific result. We changed so many ideas and what is the end result? Will we wait for the next upgrade? And then he will definitely fix it with her; Fortunately it does not affect the phone and works properly. However, many users were angry with this brand, because it does not provide solutions. It is a shame for such a big company. We give our money .... and what happened?

Hi! I have the same problem with IPhone 12 Pro Max. I bought it in the store in Playa del Carmen in January. I have a flashing logo and also sometimes I receive a message that there is water in the lighting port and the charging is not available. But no water exactly. Online apple service suggested me just to restart the phone to solve the problem with a logo. Of course it doesn’t work. Also no info concerning to the water in the lighting port. A service specialist in the store checked my iPhone with a special program and said that there was no errors. He said to wait the updates. Another specialist said to delete everything and install once again but using iTunes on the computer not just the phone. I haven’t tried yet. Did anyone try to do it ?

Hi All,

I replaced my 12 pro max 7 times till now with different colors and capacity options and found the same issue, so I believe that we have to wait for 14.5.

and for the brightness issue you just need to switch off an option called Reduce white point

Setting - Accessibility - Display &text size - Reduce white point - OFF

hope that will help with dim screen issue.

thanks.

I’m in Dubai, in January I replaced 6 devices from Apple Authorized reseller all of them with the same issue and then I requested them to refund full money and return the device.

yesterday I bought a new one again produced on February 7 week and again same issue. So I’ll wait for the SW update for now as I believe no need to replace my phone any more.
