Apple logo flash at startup

New iPhone 12 Pro. At startup the Apple logo flashes super bright for a brief second then the screen goes dark for about 10 seconds before the Apple Logo re appears at normal brightness to finish the startup. I’ve had iPhones for years and never had the logo turn on and then off during startup. Is that Normal for the 12?

There seem to be more reports of this issue over the past few days; as of now, there's no official response from Apple yet, but it's certainly not normal.

For the most part it seems the phone can function normally after it boots up, although in my case it eventually led to the phone needing to be connected to power before it would boot up. I'm waiting to see what Apple says over the next few days.

I just returned my iPhone 12 Pro Max 256Gb Pacific Blue to the Apple Warranty Center in Maldives (Focus Computers)

Here are my findings.

  • When i first unboxed and booted the iPhone for the first time: The phone booted normally. Apple logo lights up, stays lit up and then boots to OS. NO APPLE logo flash
  • Used my iPhone 11 Pro Max to transfer all data. It did a normal reboot on its own after transfer of data, at this stage i still did not notice the issue.
  • Last night i charged my phone for the first time from 14% to 100% without disconnecting. I uninstalled my viber chat app because i wanted to change my number on it. Removed it and to give a sense of refresh i shutdown my iphone and boom then i could not power it on after even 10 secs. Then i let go of the power button and waited. Apple logo flashed for a sec, disappeared and after 2-3 secs apple logo came on and booted to OS.
  • 3 of my friends took the same iPhone 12 Pro Max, different colors on same day as mine. One of them has this issue came with 14.3 out of the box, 2nd guy had 14.2 and it did not have this issue, he updated to 14.3 and do not have this issue. He even did restore from his previous phone, no issue. 3rd friend same issue 14.3.
  • People are just beginning to know about this issue as no one usually shut downs and restarts their iPhone and let alone keep looking at the boot screen for issues.
  • Maybe more than just a software issue and related to a batch.

I contacted support and this is what they told me. Apparently, Apple is still not yet aware of the issue *sigh* I don't want to replace my unit again for the 3rd time.

  • Thanks again for those details. With regards to your question, not necessarily all units manufactured or distributed on that date range are affected as we currently don't have any official reports on our end about it. Apple tests its products and features before shipment/release, but when issues do emerge, Apple works quickly to resolve them. Be rest assured that we'll be further investigating this.
  • The best next step is to get this escalated to our specialized team over the phones with our Apple Engineering already.

Hello Again Everyone,

SOLUTION WHEN WITHIN 14-DAYS; especially if you are not comfortable waiting for the update.

@GreenEyedDi01

@Uban-Jiji

@MzKeek

@JoshnHaley (you have 2-days, I think)

@Eman1970

I apologize for the delay.  Work has been quite exciting, as of late.

As promised, the best solution without having to wait for an update would need to be done within your 14-day return period.  Here is how I succeeded.

First, these users and their respective posts are the reason I was able to buy my family logo-flash-free iPhone 12 Pro Max (512 GB) devices; three of six had the issue, as noted in my earlier post, and as of today all six are logo-flash-free.

  4. Jan 23, 2021 8:17 AM GMT (user: ayyu8m)

The solution is to buy a device made prior to week 52 (December) of calendar year 2020.  The link that will help you achieve this was graciously provided in @ayyu8m’s January 23, 8:17 AM GMT, post.  I will make reference when to use it in my steps below.  Here is the link:

I had first called Apple, was transferred to a Senior Apple Technician, discussed the four threads I noted, then received the following advise.  The Senior Apple Technician said to go to the Apple Store and do the following:

STEPS:

  1. Ask for the store manager
  2. Explain the situation and the conversation that I had with the Senior Technician
  3. Show the manager the flashing issue, and reference this thread; specifically the ones by the user’s I credited.
  4. Ask to return and repurchase a new device, but explain that you would like to isolate the device based on the serial code; make reference to the post with the link.  You can type the serial code from the back of your box and show him the production date the site is showing.  Just to note, the website only gave me 10 searches.  You may want to test it at home before going in so that you’re familiar with how the site displays the data.
  5. Ask the manager to bring about five devices for you to check before purchasing.
  6. Verify the production date by searching the serial code found on the back of each new box.
  7. If the production date was prior to week 52 (December) of calendar year 2020, you will be safe.  Anything week 52 (December), and on, had issues.

I did this very methodically and meticulously, and was very patient.  Be loving with the folks at the store; if they aren’t following, try to re-explain it as clearly as possible.

Also, I did a full return and repurchase during all of my interactions because the Apple Care+ Theft & Loss was tied to each device already, and they were not able to unlink it.  I didn’t mind since it extended my return period each time, but I did call my charge card to let them know I would be returning/repurchasing devices due to an issue since it would look weird after my initial large purchase.

One tip.  I found that half of the devices I ended up with were assembled in the United States.  Their serial codes start with G0NDV; the remaining alpha-numeric characters were different.

Please let me know how it goes for you.

My wishes of a good and easy outcome to anyone that is able to tackle this within their 14-day return period; in addition, may everyone’s heart be content.

Please tell me how the heck I can get out of this conversation!!

You need to deal with a bug in the forum software:

  • Scroll to the top of the page on a computer and you will see a button that says “Following"
  • Click on it and it will change to “Follow"
  • Now click the "reload" arrow for your browser.
  • If it changes back to "Following" after you reload the page, repeat the action; it may take several tries.

Once it remains the white "Follow" after you reload the page, you're done. You will have to repeat the process for roughly as many times as you have posted to the thread.

The fact that aside for a brief moment after you press the button to boot your phone it works as designed should help assuage you of any concerns.

If nothing else, remember that in most countries, you have a full year from the date of purchase for any hardware issues that arise with your phone to be fixed by Apple for free.

That is mostly true, but we are talking about a high-end product here and so people are naturally anxious to fully understand the scale of the anomaly.

While purchasing a premium product (such as an iPhone) doesn't mean we should never expect possible bugs or manufacturing defects, when these are present it is important to establish

  1. whether it's a software defect
  2. whether it's a hardware defect
  3. in case it's hardware, whether it may affect, in unforeseen ways, other functionality

As for me, given it's a very recent purchase, should this be hardware-related I would want to replace it sooner rather than later.

Just got a new iPhone 11! and it’s done it on there so not fixed as I installed 14.7.1.

It was NEVER a problem in the iPhone 11 or any other model iPhone. It specifically occurred ONLY on the iPhone 12, and it wasn’t a problem, it was a minor cosmetic issue. If you have a problem with your iPhone 11 it is NOT the same problem; you should contact Apple support to find out why your phone isn’t working properly.

To update all of these requirements must be met:

  • You must be connected to a Wi-Fi network (and not a personal hotspot)
  • The phone must be charged to at least 50%, and preferably plugged in so it stays above 50% during the update
  • The phone must not be in Low Power Mode
  • The phone must not be connected through VPN
  • The phone cannot be in Airplane mode
  • The phone should not have useless antivirus/antimalware garbage apps on it

From Denmark, so that’s why the language looks weird!

I got my iPhone 12 Pro 128 Gb grey today, and started setting it up. Will setting it up via my PC, it wanted to update. When I checked in again, the phone had frozen and my PC had run out of battery.. i wasn’t able to get away from the update screen, so I made a hard restart. That’s when I first notice the flash while turning on the phone, that why I found this forum... While using the phone tonight I noticed that every time I was in a completely white screen, there’a was a picture of the apple logo and an indicator bar in the background... So weird! Hope you can see it on the screenshots. It’s not easy, when your not looking at the actual phone.
