Apple logo flash at startup

New iPhone 12 Pro. At startup the Apple logo flashes super bright for a brief second then the screen goes dark for about 10 seconds before the Apple Logo re appears at normal brightness to finish the startup. I’ve had iPhones for years and never had the logo turn on and then off during startup. Is that Normal for the 12?

After more than two weeks, I think that it is time to sum up the situation: the "flashing Apple logo" issue described by Blue-per does not occur when we unbox and boot the iPhone 12 (mini)/12 Pro (Max) for the first time, it occurs when the iPhone is already set up.

In most cases the phone performs normally after it boots up. Some users found hardware problems when using their new iPhone (phone needing to be connected to power in order to boot up, screen burn-in, battery charges very slowly, camera not taking HDR photos, etc.).

In my opinion those problems are not related with the flashing logo at startup, because they are very different from each other and they are isolated cases. They are just coincidences.

That does not mean that the flashing logo is not an issue: there are iPhone 12/12 Pro which boots with the (classic) steady Apple logo and some iPhone 12/12 Pro that do not, so it is obviously not a normal thing. It is not a "new feature" or "expected behavior".

After reading other answers on the forum, we can deduce that the issue does not occur on iPhone 12/12 Pro that were shipped with iOS 14.1 or with iOS 14.2 pre-installed, it (mainly) occurs on iPhone 12/12 Pro shipped in January with iOS 14.3 pre-installed. As a matter of fact a lot of people returned the device during the last weeks and got a new one with the same problem.

Now, we suppose (and hope) that the issue is part of iOS 14.3 and not in the hardware of the phone. In this case Apple should be able to fix it with an update, maybe already with a sub-dot-release (iOS 14.4.X) or later with iOS 14.5. There are some comments in favor of that supposition too, where people noticed that issue after updating from iOS 14.2 to iOS 14.3.

On the other hand, it is strange that (most) iPhones who updated the operating system from 14.2 to 14.3 did not experience the issue. And it is even stranger that I read a reply from a user who encountered the problem already on iOS 14.2. Those facts contradict our supposition above, and maybe the flashing logo has nothing to do with iOS 14.3.

I am sure a lot of people have this problem too; they do not notice it, because nowadays we do not shutdown and restart our phones very often. And even if they do that, they (probably) don't keep looking at the boot screen for issues.

It is very hard for us to guess if it is a software or a hardware problem. Only Apple can give us an official answer, and in order to solve the problem as soon as possible I ask you to continue upvoting this and other similar posts (clicking on "I have this question too"), commenting if you have some news from Apple and reporting the case to the Apple Support.

This sounds like something different; the logo appearing for a few seconds when the iPhone boots is normal. What isn't is a very brief flash, followed by the screen going dark for a few seconds before the Apple logo comes back on. As far as we can tell, it affects phones that were produced recently, with iOS 14.3 pre-installed; I've not yet heard of a case where it affects phones that were delivered with previous version of iOS and subsequently upgraded to 14.3.

Can you let us know if you have a 12, or a 12 Pro or Pro Max? Someone on another forum said it occurred on a recently acquired 12; until now, it was only 12 Pro or Pro Max.

I had the same problem with my iPhone 12 Pro Max. iOS 14.3 came pre installed, I exchanged it yesterday. Thankfully my new one came with 14.2 pre installed; I did the update to 14.3 and it’s still fine. The phone is too expensive to have this problem. FYI, you will not be able to put the phone on recovery mode with it being this way. Forget having to restore anything from iTunes.

Btw, I’m on my 3rd iPhone 12 pro max; the first one had signal issues. My 11 pro max was perfect, I should have kept it.

I am having the same problem with flashing Apple logo on boot. After it flashes I have to hold to power button again to get it to power on. I just got my Iphone 12 Pro Max last week. It did not do this at first power on, but after I loaded my backed up image from Iphone 7 plus. I have read that it's best to restore, and then load from backed up Iphone 12 backed up file. I am going to give it try, if it doesn't work then I'll be returning this for a refund.

No, it is not a "new feature" or "intended behavior". As I already wrote on a post in this thread, after reading other answers on the forum we deduced that the issue does not occur on iPhone 12/12 Pro that were shipped with iOS 14.1 or with iOS 14.2 pre-installed, it occurs exclusively on iPhone 12/12 Pro shipped in January (and later) with iOS 14.3 pre-installed.

And people who updated their operating systems from iOS 14.1/14.2 to iOS 14.3/14.4 did not encounter the flashing logo at startup, so it is not a "new innovation".

It is a harmless bug in the boot process. It doesn’t affect use of the phone in any way. Remember that the iPhone is a COMPUTER even though it is called an “iPhone”. It’s really just a very power pocket sized computer that, by the way, can also make phone calls. As the phone starts various processes are started sequentially, and the display goes on and off as this occurs. The fix, when it comes in a future release, will be to turn the display off during the boot process. However, you will know in your heart that even though you don’t see it, the Apple logo is going on and off in the dark, so to speak, as the phone starts up.

Hi GreenEyedDi01!

Unfortunately, I, too, had to go through three iPhone 12 Pro Max (512 GB) devices. However, after the third device, I successfully purchased a device without the “Apple Logo Flash” issue; this was thanks to the advice from a user on one of the original posts of this thread. I will credit them in a separate post, and outline the steps I took.

I wanted to add to the experiences you shared. When I would hold the power button down, the logo would flash and the background remained black; if I did not release the power button the instant the flash appeared (logo flashed), holding the button any longer would not boot the iOS. In addition, to further clarify, if I held the power button down and the logo flashed and I released the button two seconds after the flash, iOS would not boot up. I hope that helps add to the clarification.

As noted earlier, I went through three devices for my phone. Our family purchased six devices in total. Once I was able to figure out how to isolate the purchase using the advice from one of the original posts, I replaced two more devices that were plagued with the “Apple Logo Flash” issue. At this time, all six devices do not have an issue.

MOTHERBOARD needs replacing .. that’s what they told me today at the Genius Bar ... it’s a brand new phone ... not even a one month old phone!!! :( Either they replace mother board or they offered me a refurbished phone .. which is out of question ...least for me: given how much this phone cost n to have hardware issues as so! This is so wrong on every level ...

I did what was recommended to me here. Pressed the on button for 15 seconds let it flash and left it alone. The iPhone pro starts up normally after that the flash and works perfectly. Nothing to freak out about. I just wondered if it was happening to other people and to see that it is but doesn't really affect the way the phone works or have any bad effect on its function, means its nothing to worry about.

What you see is a minor cosmetic glitch. It in no way affects the operation of the phone; it’s just that the startup process neglected to shut off the screen while booting. Word on the street is that the next version of iOS will fix it. However, even it it is fixed by disabling the screen during startup, you will know in your heart that the Apple logo will appear twice, you just won’t see the first instance because the screen will be off.
