I currently have an early 2014 MacBook Air running Big Sur with no reported problems in the offing!
Is there any indication anywhere how long Apple will issue OS updates for this model, and will there be any problems carrying on running this machine when they stop?

There's is no indication yet as far as i know. But your Mac will keep running fine, even if you can't download a new OS. Security updates for the existing running OS can keep available

You’re welcome. I suppose it will be communicated if an older OS isn’t supported anymore/doesn’t get security updates anymore
