migrate all my files from a 27 inch Mid 2011 running El Capitan 10.11.6 to my new 21.5 inch 2020 running Big Sur 11.0.1. I am not having any luck using Migration Assistant via WiFi, Ethernet cable or a fresh Time machine backup. Suggestion

I am trying to move all my applications and files using Migration Assistant from my old computer to my new computer. I tried using WiFi first in Migration Assistant with no luck everything appeared as indicated in the instructions but no transfer occurred. I then tried using an Ethernet cable, again switching to peer to peer occurred but the old computer went back to WiFi and no transfer occurred. I then tried to use my Time machine backup but the external drive had a Firewire cable. I then made a new Time machine backup using a USB connected 4TB toshiba external. The old computer requested to erase the external before backup and I agreed. Back up took about 5 hours. I then tried to move the applications and files using the new Time Machine backup and the new computer did recognize the backup and processed 71000 files but never transferred to the new computer. Any and all suggestions would be appriciated.

Thank you for responding.

After upgrading my new Imac to Big Sur I received an Error that "not enough Disk space". Using Disk utility I found out that my Macintosh HD drive had only 58 GB of unused space. After contacting Apple support and was told the upgrade to Big Sur had corrupted my Macintosh HD drive. Using Disk Utility I erased and reinstalled Big Sur successfully. I then went to Migration Assistant to initiated the transfer from my latest Time machine backup. I was successful in transferring my Data and applications to my new Imac.

Hello Papahemi,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

We understand the importance of having all your data on your new Mac. We'll be glad to assist.

Please try using these steps: Transfer files between two Mac computers using target disk mode

This will guide you with connecting via Thunderbolt ports and moving the files with target disk mode.

Have a great day.
