Phone died and won't power back on

My phone was at 2% this morning and I put it on charge and went about my day. When I checked back the phone was completely dead and showed the red battery and power icon so I plugged it into a different charger. Checked back on it in a little while and it would no longer show anything - it was blank and would not respond to a hard reset. I plugged it into my laptop and it isn't responding either - not even being detected by my laptop.

What happened and can I fix this?
