DVDs won't load

My disk drive won't load DVD. I insert the DVD, it sounds like it starts and it clicks, then it ejects the DVD. It seems to accept CD's but not DVD. I have tried running a DVD that I have used before and they don't work anymore. I have also tried the below without any success.

-Cleaning with a lens cleaner

-Cleaning with canned air

-Reseting the SMC

-Reseting the Reset NVRAM/PRAM

-Running the Apple diagnostics

-Deleting com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.sidebarlists.plist in preferences

For reference, I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro running macOS Sierra v10.12.6.

Hi soeden,

There's a couple of more troubleshooting steps you can take to try resolving this matter. Try starting up your Mac in safe mode and testing out your DVD. This will prevent your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up. Starting in safe mode will take a little longer than normal, because it verifies and repairs the directory, cleans caches, and loads only Apple-critical items.

How to use safe mode on your Mac

If the issue still occurs in safe mode, then reinstall macOS: How to reinstall macOS

If neither of these work for you, we'd be led to believe that this is a hardware issue. Your Mac is considered obsolete at this time which means that Apple has discontinued all hardware service for obsolete products, with no exceptions and service providers are also unable to order parts for obsolete products.

Thanks and have a great day.

Hello soeden,

Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities. Are you using an Apple SuperDrive to play DVDs on your MacBook Pro or a third party device? You mentioned that it accepts CDs without ejecting. Does it play those CDs? Also, if you haven't already, go through the steps in this link and see if they have any impact on the issue:

Troubleshooting DVD Player on Mac

Kind regards.

Hi Eric~F,

Thank you for the reply. I have tried using safe mode and reinstalling macOS. Unfortunately, these don't work either, so it looks like it's a hardware issue.

Would a Apple SuperDrive be compatible with my Mac? My Mac may be considered obsolete, but everything else is still going strong!

Regardless of the above, thank you for the help.

Thanks,

soeden

Hi Keisha_Keisha,

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm using the disc drive built into my MacBook Pro (it's from 2012 when MacBooks still had built in disc drives). I also use the DVD player that was already installed, if this helps. Yes, the CD's come up in iTunes, as they normally would/should.

I have looked at the page that you linked before but unfortunately it isn't useful to my situation. I don't get any messages and the DVD's that I use are 100% the correct region (as I say, I've tried to play DVD's that I've used before and they don't work any more).

Hope this helps. If you there's other information I can give you, let me know.

Thanks
