Can't mount old CD-ROM and DVD, AKA "com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49153"

Found this topic after searching around how to use my old DVD backups. I can't open many of the DVDs I have from past works, photos, music and lots of stuff. The Superdrive makes noises but no icon is shown in the Desktop for many of these DVD. After checking Disk Utility I see them greyed and if I try to mount them, I get this error:

"Could not mount 'disk name'. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49153.)"

Apparently all this is related to Catalina unable to read the CD-ROM or DVD HFS volume format. Only solution that seemed to work was this one, but it is too time consuming, I want to copy many DVD to an external hard drive and I can't read them. I now seem to have to downgrade to Mojave or find someone else's Mac to copy them. But I have like 50 DVD to backup and I really don't want to borrow someone's computer (if I can find any).

Since I can't reply in the original topic, I would very much like to use my DVD not having to go through Terminal. Also, it's an opportunity to complain a bit about this and maybe try to tell Apple that people still want to use their old DVD!

Maybe someone does have a solution? Maybe we can just sit here together in despair with many boxes of memories I can't use anymore, although I recorded them just not to loose them :(

Any Windows PCs for Use?

Are you able to use a Windows PC to gather all of this data? If so, use that. Unless strictly Mac data, or assigned only to this Mac (encrypted), then I do not see any issue here. If you need to use an external drive, then use one made for your Windows version.

Or Try This:

Downgrade, Temporarily:

If using Mojave is the only way to go, then downgrade your own Mac to it. You'd access everything off of Mojave from this Mac. Once accessed, proceed from there with the recovery.

1. First, Backup your Mac, then

2. Install your macOS Mojave anew.

3. Perform the recovery

4. Restore from Backup in Step 1

In Depth:

1. Back up your Mac:

Start by Creating a Time Machine Backupof my Mac. That way I could be assured that Incan recover my Mac, should I need the App back or if anything goes wrong due to the removal. So, Create a Time Machine backup of your Mac, so that you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall.

2. Use a USB Bootable Installer:

Create a USB Bootable Installer for Mojave. Delete the hard drive's partition. Then, install Mojave with. Go Here: How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support. Next, migrate it over from the Time Machine Backup you created in step 1 to this new install.

3. Perform the Data Recovery:

See if you can recover this in Mojave.

4. Restore from Current Backup:

Restore your Mac from the back you just made.

Oops, sorry I didn't explain myself quite well… I meant I would like to try making a bootable system to boot up from, and then copy the files. Not booting from the installer, that can't be done, but from a Mojave system installed on another hard drive or USB pendrive bigger than 16 GB.

After all, the only thing I needed to do is copy files from recorded DVD into a new external hard drive.

So I would use…

  1. My Mac, but booting from…
  2. An external drive A with a functional Mojave MacOS installed in it.
  3. The new external drive B where I want my files stored.
  4. The external DVD reader to read all of the…
  5. DVD disks I intend to copy to the disk B.

This would work better for me rather than downgrading my Mac just for this purpose. However, since I managed to get a Mac with Mojave and already did everything in that iMac, the problem is solved now.

Thank you again :)

Hello TheLittles!

THANK YOU for this great solution.

But finally, I was able to borrow a Mojave iMac for the weekend and spent countless hours copying all of the DVD, there were a few!

I wouldn't like to downgrade the whole computer for a one-time problem. If I have again to do anything like this, I would probably install Mojave in a bootable USB drive that has always been a good idea when this kind of problems arise. I should be able to boot from the USB and then, just plug-in the drive, the external reader and copy the files to the drive, wouldn't I?

Cheers,

You are welcome.

No. What you mention (being it is mojave-only and on its own install) would not work, unfortunately, as a USB bootable installer for macOS is for installing the macOS. Booting from an external drive would work, if you had files on other media than your current partition, that can only be read by Catalina.

Being that the above is not the the case, and you want to recover them from the current install, then that is what data recovery is all about: plugging in a backup and migrating them from that.

This is its own partition, and the boot drive in itself would be its own partition, thereby not letting items to be readable. Not being readable is all about protection of data.

Hope that makes this clear.
