Functionality of iPad A1430

I am trying to get an old iPad of mine to boot up, but the screen isn't responding. It's been on charge for the majority of the day, but still nothing is happening. I'm trying to get it to work again because it was my first proper electronic device (apart from a blue A1320 that doesn't work either). The iPad is in mint condition, no scratches, cracks, dents or chunks out of it anywhere; it spent most of its life up until a few hours ago in a Lifeproof case. Is there still a chance it is functional? What should I do to get it up and running again? This device is kinda important to me, I want to preserve it as long as possible.

As described, your iPad2 (with the 30-pin connector) has perhaps reached the end of the road. If the iPad remains unresponsive when connected to the Power Adapter, there are three distinct areas of potential issue.

1) Your Power Adapter is defective. Change for a “known good” USB Power Adapter.

2) Your Power/Data cable is defective. Change for a “known good” USB to 30-pin cable.

3) The iPad itself has failed.

Given its age, even if you could find someone prepared to attempt repair of the iPad, the cost is unlikely to be an economic proposition. The repair will also likely entail complete erasure of the iPad; as you will discover, there a few (if any) compatible third-party Apps in the App Store - all 32-bit Apps having been long ago withdrawn.

All that said, a forced-restart of the iPad - whilst connected to the Power Adapter - will do no harm:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.
