Apple Carplay Changes Audio Source

I have this annoyance with my 2020 Toyota RAV4. It did the same thing on my previous car, 2019 Toyota RAV4. CarPlay keeps changing my audio source to the (iPhone XS MAX, iOS14.3 currently) when it starts up. I typically listen to the radio (FM or AM), it will change the audio source to the iPhone (USB device). I need to go into Toyota native audio player and switch back it back to radio each and every time I startup CarPlay. Regardless if the iPhone is connected to the vehicle before starting or the iPhone is connected to the vehicle after the vehicle is started. Toyota's latest firmware was/is installed on the 2020 RAV4 and the 2019 RAV4.

FYI: RAV4 only has wired CarPlay.

CarPlay was introduced with the in 2018MY in North America. A few models had CarPlay available from the factory while a few others had CarPlay available as a firmware update. My 2018 Sienna had CarPlay available as a firmware update and I did it at the dealer. My 2019 RAV4 had CarPlay from the factory. 2020MY have both CarPlay and Android auto from the factory.

I figured out that Waze is changing my audio settings. When CarPlay boots up, Waze also boots up as it’s the last application running. When I switched to google maps, no more audio switching at boot up. Filed a report with Waze and they asked me to delete the app and redownload. It seems to have helped, but occasionally still switches audio settings at boot up. They asked for more info which I will send when I can duplicate every time.

Seems the issue is all around and made worse after iOS 14. No fix from anywhere; seems to be worse and worse.

I also have a neighbour with the same issue ln his Suzuki SX4 as well as on my own BMW.

It’s clearly not a car manufacturer issue.

I also opened a ticket with Waze as I belive myself that is the culprit too.

Waze responded they are aware of a problem like so but no fix yet :(

It is very clearly NOT an iPhone issue. There is no way an update to iOS can impact the behaviour of the vehicle infotainment system or its software. The iPhone is purely a source of data which has no ability to modify the operation of the vehicle's hardware, the infotainment can command the iPhone but the iPhone can't command the infotainment.

Where the responsibility rests between Apple, the infotainment (hardware) manufacturer(s), and the vehicle manufacturer will only be resolved with knowledge of the contracts and licensing between all the parties.

Actually it’s the way Carplay is designed - it’s following a set of rules and specs.

Since nothing changed software level on the car, it also has several car manufacturers facing against the issue and it worked just fine in 2018 and 2019, the only “new” element here is the software on the phone or the OS itself.

Someone messed up somewhere or something changed. Upon further reading Waze was not the only App with this kind of trouble. But at least for now it seems to stick with them.

As soon as Waze boots up, the source is changed.

This was not an issue pre iOS 14!

My 2019 Rav4 selects the last used audio source at power up. If I was playing my Apple Music it resumes where I paused it. If I was listening to radio it resumes on the last used radio channel, etc. If the audio was off it stays off.

The car is one of the first UK spec Rav4 Hybrid, which has the Toyota system rather than CarPlay which was not available until MY2020 (or retrofit upgrade). Unless there are regional differences I would expect this would also apply to your previous Rav4,/2019 which you say had the same problem so you need to be a little more specific.

You're incorrect, Carplay can modify the operation of the vehicle hardware, specifically the steering wheel controls can control Carplay.

When Carplay is running:

1) The offhook button will launch the iphone phone app.

2) The push to talk button will launch Siri.

How can you say all those things when you reported that your UK 2019 RAV4 does not have Carplay?

Branta_uk... this forum is reporting that Carplay is available as a retrofit to your 2019 RAV4 as long as it's not an ICON grade. Contact your dealer.

Yup. Exactly the same answer for me too, like I said. It seems it's now a Waze issue in combination with something that changed in the way Carplay is handled.

It's become even worse with the latest updates :(

Hoping to see a fix soon as it's really getting on my nerves.
