Page numbering formatting settings

I am setting page numbering formatting, and Pages is not applying the settings. Specifically, I am setting the format to small Roman numerals for a section, and the display is still Arabic numerals. Any suggestions? I am running Big Sur and Pages 10.3.9. It's a word processing document. I've attached a screenshot.

Let's say you have two sections, and in the first, you want Roman numerals, and in the second section, you want Arabic numeration.

  1. In the first section, insert your page number, and then from the toolbar, click Document, and select its Section tab. You will find a Page numbering section there where you can select Roman numerals as the format.
  2. In the second section, you visit the same Document > Section tab, and this time, you uncheck Match previous section and ensure that your Page numbering is set to Arabic formatting. You may want to adjust your Continue or Start at numeration depending on your page numbering intent.

Those two steps should isolate your Roman numeral page numbers to the first section.

Thanks, yes, the issue was, or so I thought, that although I had formatted as you described, the page numbers weren't displaying as formatted. However, after I posted, I discovered that I had inserted page numbers in the header already, and was trying to insert them in the footer, and this was causing the problem! This also explains why the Insert Page Number option wasn't popping up when I placed the cursor in the footer. All solved. Thank you.
