Hello rosecath,
To clarify a bit further does the blue dot display with a check mark within it? For example if you're in the Messages app and seeing the various communications with different contacts, do the ones not shown with a bluet dot display with a black dot to the left, and do you see 'Done' towards the top-left of the display with the blue dot appears? If you're in a message thread and see the blue dot, do the other messages display with a black dot, and do you see a trash can icon towards the bottom left?
If so, that would indicate that an option was chosen that allows for messages to be selected. More information about what options can appear, or how messages are selected can be found in the following article.
Use Messages o your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Have a great day.

Hello rosecath,
Apple Support Communities is a great place for assistance. To clarify, are you seeing this dot next to the message thread after sending a message, or does it appear in the message thread itself where you see the sent and received messages with that contact? If it's within the message does it show on the left or right side of the message? If it shows on the right side does it appear as though the 'send' icon remains on the display after sending the message?
Have a great day.
Hi, the blue dot appears in the message log on the left side of the message after I send the message. it looks just like when someone sends me a message and I haven't opened it yet.
Hi rosecath,
We appreciate the clarification. With it showing that the message is unread, but no unread messages appear in that thread it would be recommended to restart the iPhone and confirm the iOS is updated to the latest versions.
Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the dot continues to appear after those steps it's recommended to contact Apple via the Get Support website.
Take care!
I am on the main text message page on my iPhone. the blue dots are usually to the left of the text messages I have not read yet. there is not a check mark or black dots or anything else that show up here ever ( well do not disturb half moons sometimes)
