Magic Mouse 2 must be reconnected after each reboot in Bootcamp

I have 31 just out of the box iMacs on which I need to install Bootcamp. Everything goes fine, except from the moment Windows starts installing the Magic Mouse 2 won't work. Once Windows is completely installed and I go to Bluetooth devices, remove it (it does see it, it just won't work), then add it back it works...until you reboot, when you have to go through the same remove/re-add steps again. Sometimes you do have to turn the mouse off and then back on before it will reconnect, sometimes not. I've noticed no pattern for that. I have never noticed that it just stops working after some time has passed--all that I've ever noticed is that is stops after a reboot. It doesn't stop between users signing in/out. Both the keyboard (which works every time without issues during the Windows install) and the mouse show up in the device manager as HID devices. The keyboard has sometimes quit when I'm messing with everything trying to get the mouse to work, and the same situation applies here as the mouse--it sees it, but removing and adding it back makes it start working again.

Here's what I've tried or that doesn't help:

  • Updates are current on both the Mac OS and Window 10 side.
  • I've manually downloaded the Bootcamp drivers as described in HT204923 and installed those. It seems to install some video drivers, based on the appearance of the screen, but it doesn't do anything with the mouse.
  • I've talked to Apple Support to make sure there aren't any new, but not yet available, updates to Bootcamp and to see if they can help. They say there are not any additional updates, and that it's a Windows issue. (And predictably, Microsoft says it's a Mac issue).
  • I've looked for the "Allow the computer to turn off device to save power" options. The Power management tab is not there on any items under Bluetooth, nor on the Bluetooth option under network. It is there on the mouse, but it's already unchecked, although grayed out. But again, I don't see this as the issue, as it doesn't just periodically quit--only at reboot.
  • I've run Apple Software update in Windows- says no updates.
  • This has occurred exactly the same on the first 10 out of the box iMacs--I'm doing four at once, and just didn't realize it was happening for a while. I thought once I connected it, it was fixed. I was wrong.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd sure love to hear them. I need to get these in a lab, but there's no way I can expect students to use the keyboard through all the steps to re-enable the mouse. And it seems a shame to have to use a bunch of third-party, corded mice.

• Disable Wifi (mine are connected via ethernet)

WiFi networks on 2.4GHz are notorious for interfering with BT. If OP's Macs are connected to 5GHz Radios, it is less likely to make a difference.

• Disable Power Settings on Broadcom Driver

This kicks in when the device is idle for a duration.

Update Broadcom over UART driver to ver 12.0.1.874 dated 5/24/18. This was part of this thread • https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252398062?login=true

Depending on the Radios used on OP's iMacs, it may work. It is a very messy update. See https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=Broadcom+serial+uart . Unless the PID/VID of the radio are known, Windows Update should provide such updates. On another discussion that you have posted, OP used Optional updates.

Go to settings > windows update and select optional updates > Broadcom update

I already had a USB mighty mouse. Using that, I disconnected both the MM2 and the Magic keyboard with numeric keypad. I did a restart, and held option to select the boot partition. At this point, the Magic keyboard works to arrow to the MacOS, the MM2 does not.

This is not a good sign. MM2 should work at this point, irrespective of the OS, since you are in the Boot Manager, which should have loaded the BT driver and the known paired devices. This would indicate an EFI firmware bug.

I booted into the Mac OS. Both mouse and keyboard worked.
I shut down, held the Ctrl + Shift + Option key and power buttons at the same time, then released.
It started up.

This strengthens the issue of EFI Firmware.

I shut it down, then held Command, Option, P and R and pressed the power button, releasing after the chime and when the apple log appeared.
Booted to Mac OS, both worked.

Good to see normal behavior.

Rebooted, picked Windows partition. Keyboard still worked, mouse did not.

Not good.

Do you have access to an older Mac that we can test with? A 2018 or older Mac would work well. I prefer to avoid 2019/2020 Macs and any Mac running macOS Big Sur.

In About the security content of macOS Big Sur 11.1, Security Update 2020-001 Catalina, Security Update 2020-007 Mojave - Apple Support, it mentions a BT Security issue. The same update is also available in macOS Catalina.

Bluetooth
Available for: macOS Mojave 10.14.6, macOS Catalina 10.15.7
Impact: A remote attacker may be able to cause unexpected application termination or heap corruption
Description: Multiple integer overflows were addressed with improved input validation.
CVE-2020-27906: Zuozhi Fan (@pattern_F_) of Ant Group Tianqiong Security Lab

After you install Windows, can you temporarily turn-off WiFi and check if it alters the behavior?

Are the user accounts you create for Windows have Administrative rights to the Windows installation?

Unfortunately, while the keyboard can, the MM2 can't be tethered. The port is on the bottom of the mouse rather than on the side. I am able to get this to temporarily work, buy removing the mouse on the Mac side, unchecking the three "look for mouse stuff" turning off usb, booting to windows, removing it there, rebooting and adding it back, and I thought that was going to solve my problem, but unfortunately if anyone ever turns the mouse off it stops working, and it may stop anyway. At this point I'm trying to come up with a script to turn the mouse off and back on on the windows side, but having trouble getting that to work. If you happen to have a script for that, I'd love to have it. If this doesn't work, apparently I'm going to be buying a bunch of corded mice or some other brand of Bluetooth mice, since they work. It seems only the Magic Mouse 2 won't work... sad. I wish Apple would help.

Unfortunately I do not have the same iMac model as you do, so I cannot simulate your specific situation.

Corded devices may also mitigate some BT interference issues.

If you are within the return period for your Macs, and since you have 31 devices, Apple may allow an exception, if you want to pursue it further.

I briefly thought I had resolved it by going through a series of steps where on the Mac side I removed the mouse, turned off Bluetooth options, then turned off Bluetooth, booted into Windows, removed the mouse and added it back. That worked for most of a day, but then if anyone ever turned the mouse off, it quit working, and it may have just quite anyway--not sure, but in any case, it quit working. In a lab environment used by students, I need something reliable. I can't have class starting and someone without a mouse.

Using these steps generates new 'link'' keys which can cause issues on the macOS side. If you re-pair the MM2 in macOS, it will again stop working in Windows. BT/WiFi co-existence settings used to be explicit in older drivers, which the user could control, but that is no longer the case.

BT debugging on Windows is a bit more painful than macOS. If you have the desire to pursue this option, let me know. Also, see https://mezdanak.de/2019/07/12/ios-bluetooth-packet-logging/ for references to the Apple Packet Logger.

If you have paid for the MM2s, and still have the original packaging, one option to consider is to resell them as Used and recoup some of your CapEx. This would be better than leaving them unused in storage somewhere.

VMware Fusion provides a free license for non-commercial use, which can help you test one iMac and see if an imported VM can help you workaround this challenge.

Not sure what we would be testing?

Use a different Mac Model, install Windows on it, and test that the current Keyboard/MM2 pair properly in macOS and Windows and work properly. in either OS, once paired in macOS. I have a MM2/MK2 and a 2018 Mini and have no issues with both being paired and working properly. W10 was installed using these MM2/MK2 without any issues.

Also, do you have any pending software updates on the macOS side?

Sort of setting up a script to run each time it boots up to disconnect and reconnect the mouse, or buying corded mice, I don't have a solution.

This is very inefficient. We need to find the root cause and remedy it.
