Magic Mouse 2 must be reconnected after each reboot in Bootcamp

I have 31 just out of the box iMacs on which I need to install Bootcamp. Everything goes fine, except from the moment Windows starts installing the Magic Mouse 2 won't work. Once Windows is completely installed and I go to Bluetooth devices, remove it (it does see it, it just won't work), then add it back it works...until you reboot, when you have to go through the same remove/re-add steps again. Sometimes you do have to turn the mouse off and then back on before it will reconnect, sometimes not. I've noticed no pattern for that. I have never noticed that it just stops working after some time has passed--all that I've ever noticed is that is stops after a reboot. It doesn't stop between users signing in/out. Both the keyboard (which works every time without issues during the Windows install) and the mouse show up in the device manager as HID devices. The keyboard has sometimes quit when I'm messing with everything trying to get the mouse to work, and the same situation applies here as the mouse--it sees it, but removing and adding it back makes it start working again.

Here's what I've tried or that doesn't help:

  • Updates are current on both the Mac OS and Window 10 side.
  • I've manually downloaded the Bootcamp drivers as described in HT204923 and installed those. It seems to install some video drivers, based on the appearance of the screen, but it doesn't do anything with the mouse.
  • I've talked to Apple Support to make sure there aren't any new, but not yet available, updates to Bootcamp and to see if they can help. They say there are not any additional updates, and that it's a Windows issue. (And predictably, Microsoft says it's a Mac issue).
  • I've looked for the "Allow the computer to turn off device to save power" options. The Power management tab is not there on any items under Bluetooth, nor on the Bluetooth option under network. It is there on the mouse, but it's already unchecked, although grayed out. But again, I don't see this as the issue, as it doesn't just periodically quit--only at reboot.
  • I've run Apple Software update in Windows- says no updates.
  • This has occurred exactly the same on the first 10 out of the box iMacs--I'm doing four at once, and just didn't realize it was happening for a while. I thought once I connected it, it was fixed. I was wrong.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd sure love to hear them. I need to get these in a lab, but there's no way I can expect students to use the keyboard through all the steps to re-enable the mouse. And it seems a shame to have to use a bunch of third-party, corded mice.

I had (2) 2017 iMacs w/Same issues, these worked fine and along the way there was Windows 10 Update that caused the Mouse/Keyboard BT issues. I made these changes and it seems to resolve the issue:

I’ll try turning off the wireless. My account, which is all I’ve signed on with, has admin rights. When students eventually sign on, they will not.

That is good practice.

Can you check the Radio details? Here is an example.

By the way, this is specifically a Magic Mouse issue. I tested a Dell BT mouse, and it works perfectly.

Yes, and BT versions can make a difference.

Also, there is a utility which may also help narrow down the issue. Since the Dell BT mouse works, it may be good to use this and compare available information. It produces a listing shown in this screen shot.

Most MM2 Mice can also be used in tethered mode, by connecting the charging cable to the iMac, which makes them behave like corded mice. It is not very convenient though.

I briefly thought I had resolved it by going through a series of steps where on the Mac side I removed the mouse, turned off Bluetooth options, then turned off Bluetooth, booted into Windows, removed the mouse and added it back. That worked for most of a day, but then if anyone ever turned the mouse off, it quit working, and it may have just quite anyway--not sure, but in any case, it quit working. In a lab environment used by students, I need something reliable. I can't have class starting and someone without a mouse.

I was using Bootcamp because it's free, and I'm somewhat familiar with it. I've also got several pieces of older Windows software running on Bootcamp, so I'd be a bit leery or jumping into something else that might not run them correctly. I'm sure I won't get any money back...they were all purchased as a unit from Apple. I really wish, especially since other non-Apple Bluetooth mice don't have this problem, that Apple would own it and work toward a resolution, but at this point, I'm just over it. I've been working on this for days and days on end, and I'm going back to the 4 year old wired keyboards and mice.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate that you have tried to help. Thanks so much.

Loner T, I tried the Apple Software update, but it said everything was up to date. As far as Virtual Box, but it's supposedly for personal use, and I am told we got a call from them when this was installed on a bunch of student PCs on campus, so I'm not going that route.

Armstrongbuff, I tried your suggestions. All 31 of these are also Ethernet, so turning off Wi-Fi was simple. I did disable power settings on both Broadcom 802.11ac Network Adapter and Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet. The current version that is installed for the Broadcom over UART driver is version 12.0.1.875, dated 6/21/19. I tried to roll back the driver, but version .874 was never installed, so that didn't work. I tried removing it and just installing the older version, but it wanted an .inf file, and the updated I downloaded from Microsoft Catalog didn't have one, so I was never able to get the older driver installed--and it seems like the newer .875 version would be better, anyway? In any case, none of this made any difference. The Magic Mouse 2 still stops working at each reboot - never any other time--the Dell Bluetooth mouse continues to work without issues.

Thanks again to both of you.

Not sure what we would be testing? Basically I have 31 iMacs and 31 keyboard/mice that don't (or likely won't) work in Windows. I have only set up 10 of them, and all 10 had to have the mouse manually connected in Windows to work. I just assumed that once they worked, they would keep working. I got the 10 ready and set them to the side before putting them in the lab. After I put two in the lab, users were reporting non-working mice, and I discovered I have to reconnect the mouse every time it reboots. I got three more of the 10 and put them back on my bench, and those three are all the same way as well, so I'm pretty much assuming at this point, they will all do this. Sort of setting up a script to run each time it boots up to disconnect and reconnect the mouse, or buying corded mice, I don't have a solution.

I feel fairly confident it’s not the keyboard/mouse, since it’s happening with six different computers, all using six different keyboards and mice. I actually updated all these iMacs to Big Sur—I’m going to get another one out of the box and not update, just to see if that makes a difference. I’ve checked multiple times for any updates on either side, and there are none. I’ll post if they work properly on Catalina. Thanks for your help.

Wanted to update you. I took another one out of the box and did NOT upgrade to Big Sur, but everything was almost exactly the same. The only difference is that at the windows setup screen, the keyboard worked for the Big Sur machine, but neither worked in Catalina. I had to attach a USB mouse to get started in the setup. When I got to the screen where you select the country I noticed the keyboard had started working, but the mouse still was not. Finished setup, still only keyboard worked. Ran the BootCamp drivers I downloaded from the Bootcamp app on the Mac, but that didn't help anything. Removed the mouse in Bluetooth settings, and it wouldn't reconnect until I turned it off and then back on, then it connected and worked, but as soon as I rebooted, it quit working. I made sure all windows updates, even optional ones, were applied. The only Mac update I saw was Big Sur, which I didn't install. Any more ideas? This just shouldn't be this hard.

Yes, I can replace the mouse...but I have 31 computers, so I'd have to buy 30 additional mice. I'm already out about $300 buying cable keepers to keep people from stealing the charging cords, plus more to buy remaining locking cables and padlocks to fasten them with--I have a few. Now to have to also buy mice? It's just a shame that Macs are so expensive anyway, and then to have to keep buying additional products just to be able to use them. I realize most people don't need to run Windows, so they don't face all these issues, but some of our software will only run on Windows. If Apple says you can run Windows, then they should support it. They would not help. I REALLY appreciate that you are .

As for the script, I'm working on a batch file with Bluetooth command line tools. I found one that's supposed to work, but it doesn't.
