iMac Keep restarting

Since last month my iMac (2017) keeps freezing and restarting on it's own. I've tried starting in safe mode and nothing...the only thing I've found is that this happens when I have my Apple LED Cinema Display (2010) connected to it. Is possible that the display is the cause? How can I fix this?

Thanks!

pd: all software is up to date

Hi mateamiche,

While the display could be the cause, we should also look elsewhere.

I believe we need to proceed with an EtreCheck report. EtreCheck is a useful app to diagnose issues, both hardware and software. it is trusted by many users. Please follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Go to the Mac App Store and search for "EtreCheck."
  2. Download it. It is a free and trusted app; as it is on the Mac App Store, and only trusted apps can be submitted.
  3. Run the report, and put it in a post, as seen here - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250000211

With the report, we can dive in to see why it may be restarting and freezing.

Cheers,

Jack

It may be caused by the external display, before I read your complete post my immediate reaction was a power supply issue.

Things to check is the external display, simply disconnect and then test to see if the issue continues.

To check the power supply you would need to take it to an AASP to have it checked out.

Finally to eliminate software issues, please post an EtreCheck report. If you are unfamilar with EtreCheck please read below:

Please navigate to the Mac App Store or navigate to www.Etrecheck.com and download the free version of EtreCheck. Once you have you downloaded the app and installed it, please run the report and save it. This report will help us get a good idea what has been installed on your system and help us be able to diagnose what may be wrong.

When you have your report, you can attach it when you reply to this message and we can then review it and help you determine what is needed to get your system running well again.

For instructions on how to download your EtreCheck report and attach it to your reply to this message please click https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250000211

Please try testing the machine without the NTFS drive attached and also please uninstall the Paragon software. If you have an external HD that you want to share with a PC, please reformat (this will completely wipe it clean) as ExFAT. Paragon is nothing less than a hack that has good marketing. You will need to move your data to another location temporarily so you don't lose it. If you are NOT sharing the EHD with a PC then format the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). You will use the Disk Utility App (applications - utilities - disk utility) to do the formatting.

Also, I do not see evidence that you backup the computer, if I am correct that is a BIG mistake and 100% guarantee you will lose data. At the very least you should use Time Machine to backup your system so you don't risk losing irreplaceable data such as photos, music, financial docs, etc...
