why are some of my songs grayed out and I can't put my playlist onto CD to play in my car?

Somewhat depends on what view you are seeing this in. Greyed out songs may be unchecked. Unchecked songs are excluded from track to track playback, syncing, and perhaps from a CD burn. Right-click one of the affected tracks and see if the Check Selection option comes up.
