Open a new Finder window. In the Finder's Favorites listing in the sidebar, there should be an Applications entry, which you click to expose the applications icons. Click on the preferred application icon, drag over the Dock, position where you want it, and release. That is the customary way to add an application alias to your Dock.
I want to pin it to the dock at the bottom.

Drag and drop the Application from the Finder's sidebar Applications location to the Dock where you want it located. This is just an alias, as it would be in Windows.
