Can't Restore/Revive MBP using Apple Configurator 2

Hi

I am trying to restore my 2018 MBP that has a corrupt T2 using Apple Configurator 2.

The process runs fine until the last moment where you would expect the apple logo to appear on screen, I instead get this error message on the host Mac:

The operation couldn’t be completed. (AMRestoreErrorDomain error 9 - Failed to receive message from device, might be connection problem with USB host.) [AMRestoreErrorDomain – 0x9 (9)]

I have made sure both Macs are connected at the USB master ports, and that the host Mac is on the latest version of macOS Big Sur and the latest version of Apple Configurator 2. I am also using the standard USB-C charge cable included with the Mac. I have also tried using another host machine and getting the same error.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Try an SMC Reset and a PRAM Reset on the 2018 MBPro (long shot here, but it doesn't hurt to try). Then try the process again. Is the 2018 MBPro which is having its T2 firmware "Restored" connected to a power adapter? Make sure to connect the charger directly to the laptop without using an adapter, dongle, hub, or dock.

I'm assuming you are following the instructions in this Apple article which mentions the 2018 MBPro whose T2 firmware is being "Restored" must have the USB data cable connected to the front left USB-C port.

If it still fails, then you will need to have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop.
