HP's support page for the Officejet J3680 All-in-One Printer has drivers for Mac OS X 10.6 and updates up to 10.9 only.
(https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-j3600-all-in-one-printer-series/3440986/model/3441025), so yes, this is not going to be easy.
Unless the operating system suggests a suitable driver when you add the printer, and if nothing else helps, you may possibly want to check whether the (Dec 11, 2020) updated HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS package download from Apple at https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US would work. To begin with, reset the printing system (link below). Verify that your printer is recognised. Is there an appropriate driver to use (perhaps something like the HP Officejet J3600 Series 4.0.8, or another similar HP printer)? Look upon this as an experiment. It may not work at all. There is always a certain risk involved with an experiment. Software conflicts cannot be ruled out. Data may be lost. A hardware problem is unlikely, but it is impossible to guarantee anything. Make sure that you have backup copies of important files before you start.

Hi,
There is not only one 3600 HP printer (Color LaserJet/Deskjet/Officejet/DesignJet). Which exact model is it?
Also, please clarify which macOS version you want to use.
Have you read the article linked to just above your post? You might find it useful. If not come back to us.
This is a lost cause; the Apple upgrades do not support the HP 3600 series any longer.
Seems my printer HP 3680 no longer supported by upgraded iOS on MacBook Air.
HP J 3680 , iOS now Big Sur
Officejet J3680
ios Big Sur
