USB-C vs USB-a

Hi,

I just received my new iphone 12 mini, and was told by the retailer to avoid using USB-A - lightning charger cable, and to use the new USB-C - lightning cable because it's better for the battery life.

Is that true?

No, it is not true. They only benefit of the newer USB-C charge cable, and charge cube is faster charging. However, it is still fine to charge using a USB-A to Lightning cable connected to a computer or older charge cube.
