Resetting SMC. Left shift key not working, is right shift key an option?

Only the newer Macs have some very specfic requirement on the key board left vs right and the T2 chip.

Your 2013 MBP is not on that list. However the HT specifically says Left Shift key for your machine.

I will add —Typically port definition is reset with each reboot, or reset NVRAM. This does not always sort the issue.

Therefore SMC is easy enough —Both can be reset using the Terminal

you can reset the SMC and NVRAM in the new Single User mode— this is done through Recovery now.

simple way to reset both the SMC and NVRAM using Terminal—

start up in Single-User Recovery mode using Command S R then enter the command line:

pmset -a restoredefaults && nvram -c

Reboot as normal.

Hmmm...With no access to USB ports, a wired external keyboard seems out of the question for a work a round. I do not believe a wireless key board is adequate to respond to reset SMC or resolve your issue...

I would pursue the issue w/ Customer Support  (800) MY–APPLE (800–692–7753) to explore your options and/or repair

If no resolve you can try:

sudo nvram -c
