HP OfficeJet Pro - "stopped - filter failed" - SOLUTION

This is a solution, rather than a question, as I seem to have just fixed a problem that a lot of other people were having.

When I was trying to print to my HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus, it would not print, and instead the message "stopped - filter failed" would show up in the print queue.

What solved this problem for me:

  1. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  2. On the LH side, delete the printer in question.
  3. Click the plus symbol (bottom LH) to add a new printer.
  4. If the printer is connected to the WiFi, then instead of automatically opening a new window to add a printer, the printer in question should show up under the heading "nearby devices". If you click on it, it will be added as a printer.
  5. If you try to print using it now, you shouldn't have a problem.

I have discovered that this is because Apple automatically uses "Air Print" when adding printers. If you were to add the printer manually (jump back to step 3 above, and instead of clicking on the nearby printer, click "add printer or scanner"), it a window would open that looks like this:

In the screenshot above, I have selected the printer. Notice at the bottom, next to "Use", AirPrint has been automatically selected. If I click the drop down menu, I see the following:

If I select "HP Officejet Pro 8600", add the printer, then attempt to print, I get the "stopped - filter failed" error message. My solution is therefore to ensure that you are using AirPrint.

Hope this is helpful for anyone experiencing this problem! :)
