MacBook doesn't recognize the display. I have it plugged in using the usb c port via an adaptor to an old USB port. Should that work? I have powered down and restarted. asked to detect displays, and checked specifications but the page won't open.

Since that is a genuine Thunderbolt Display, the Apple ThunderBolt-3 <-> ThunderBolt-2 adapter is the right tool to use with a ThunderBolt-3 Mac. Because the display has a captive cord, you can plug it right into the adapter.
NB> That adapter ONLY works with ThunderBolt displays, not USB-C or Mini DisplayPort or any other kinds of displays.

The USB-A ports on the display are NOT inputs. They are not fast enough for display data.
They are intended for use with slower devices like keyboards and mice -- maybe a hard drive, but never the display itself. The display has a ThunderBolt-2 Hub that splits off regular USB-A ports, but it does not work back the other direction.
By contrast, If your cable situation were different, it is likely that the Thunderbolt port COULD be used as an input, in place of the captive ThunderBolt cord.

See if this does not work.
Generally to make the jump from output to display input successfully, at most one adapter. Rarely can you stack adapters.
Maybe this is more to the point:
ok, thanks, I didn't think I stacked (just one adapter) but apparently the ports on the back don't make the connection to the laptop. I've purchased the adaptor (thunderbolt 2 to 3) and hope that will do the trick. The Macworld article was helpful. also wondering if there is a way to use the HDMI via an adaptor to the usb-c. really boggled by how many usb versions there are.
and I assume there is now no way to use the monitor's Ethernet port?

sure thing! here it is: apple thunderbolt . I believe they stopped making and supporting it shortly after I bought it.
