Smart mailbox problem with Gmail.

Hi! I am facing the following problem.

I have several email account connected to apple mail.

I create a smart mailbox to include only the emails from the inbox of some of those accounts.

It works BUT it also includes some emails from the "Archive" or the "Important" folder in the Gmail account. The problem appears only for Gmail and is driving me nuts!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.1

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities forum. It sounds like you would like messages from certain folders not to be included in your Smart Mailbox filtering. We're glad to provide some suggestions to resolve that.


Edit the Smart Mailbox and add in two more conditions:

  1. 'Message is not in mailbox' then select the 'archive' folder
  2. 'Message is not in mailbox' then select the 'important' folder

Use Smart Mailboxes in Mail on Mac


Test and see how the messages are filtered. Keep us posted if you find inconsistencies amongst the filtered emails.

Thanks for the screenshot and explanation. Consider a separate Smart Mailbox for each account with the 'all' condition for both 'Message in in mailbox' and 'Message is not in mailbox' conditions. Does that filter the messages properly?


If not, review the settings or preferences on Gmail webmail directly for the Archive and Important folders to see if there are adjustments that can be made.
