I have to reconnect Apple Pencil (1st gen.) after turning on iPad?

I recently bought an iPad (8th generation) and Apple Pencil (1st generation). I turn my iPad off when not using to conserve the battery. Every time I turn it back on, Apple Pencil shows up under "My Devices" but will not automatically turn on when I pick the pencil up and try to use it. It wants me to insert into the lightning port for it to work. Shouldn't it just work automatically once it's paired and in my devices?

Hello Alyson250,

We would like to see how we can help you with your iPad. This is expected behavior when restarting the iPad. After you pair your Apple Pencil, it will stay paired until you restart your iPad, turn on Airplane Mode, or pair with another iPad. Just pair your Apple Pencil again when you're ready to use it.
