Will Signing up for Apple Music mess up my itunes match library?

Hello! I have a subscription to itunes match, which serves as a music locker since Google Play Music went away. I upload my music library, including a lot of music not available on streaming services (like Grateful Dead box sets), and can listen on all my devices. If I sign up for Apple Music, will it mess up this library? In addition, if I ever decide to stop Apple Music (but continue my itunes match subscription), will THAT mess up my library? I don't want to do anything to interfere with my itunes match library, which has been meticulously curated, but find it ridiculous that I have to sign up for Spotify or the like because I'm terrified of what Apple Music would do to my library. Is this justified? Thanks!

As long as you have a primary library which retains local copies of all your files, and a backup of the same, then it is all good. I switched up from iTunes Match to Apple Music when HomePod came out so I could have a free choice of music to call on. See Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy - Apple Community for my suggested backup strategy.

Why don't you need a backup? The matching process isn't guaranteed to be perfect. If, for whatever reason, you lose local copies of your files and only then discover that the version held in the cloud isn't quite what you're expecting then that is where a backup comes in. When you delete from iTunes Match/Apple Music that deletion is replicated everywhere. On iOS that is immediate, for locally stored tracks in an iTunes library tracks are marked as removed rather than eliminated from the library, but I seen posts where users thought they were freeing up space on their computer only to find they'd irrevocably thrown content away. Apple Music shouldn't alter any content in your library, although I have seen both services reset metadata for purchased content. When this has happened to me I've hidden those items from my purchase history so that my preferred version is retained. I'm very particular about Title Case for example.

Thank you. I agree on the necessity of backups. I just don't want to embark on an (optional) process that will make a mess of my library and make me employ them! I also do things unconventionally. When I upload to itunes match I copy the album from an external hard drive to my desktop, then upload it, then 'remove download'. This way I still have the original file (on external HD), and the 'itunes file' is not taking up any HD space, and I don't have to worry about losing my music.

This may sound like a natural backup, but I have made a TON of metadata edits, etc, to get my library 'just right' and don't want to do anything that will screw it up.
