Canon R6 CR3 Files are Not able to be seen in PREVIEW

Many have been bringing this up as an issue for a while now...

I was happy to see a NEW Article today that said THIS ISSUE is now RESOLVED....

It's Not.... sadly

I HAVE Big Sur 11.2 on an iMac 19,1 all updates are up to date as of this writing at 1:32pm PST.

ARTICLE CONTENT

Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and macOS Big Sur

These operating systems include system-level support for RAW images taken by many third-party cameras.

iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and macOS Big Sur include enhanced support for processing digital camera RAW formats, providing better detail and improved noise reduction. These RAW formats offer greater image-editing flexibility on iOS and iPadOS using third-party apps that support RAW.1

Support for additional RAW formats is added over time. This list is current as of 2 February 2021 and reflects compatibility for the latest versions of iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and macOS Big Sur.

LISTED CAMERAs in article stating they are fixed

  • Canon EOS R5
  • Canon EOS R6

SO THIS IS A FALSE ARTICLE

It States something was Addressed, Fixed and Released....

However this is NOT the Case.

The PROBLEM is that RAW CR3 files by Canon's latest Full Frame Digital Camera, specifically the R5 and R6 are NOT supported Natively in Big Sur v11.2 and can NOT be seen in PREVIEW.

I didn't read the all the posts for this thread but have some experience with EOS RP and EOS R5 using macOS Catalina. Not all CR3 files are created equal. For example, Catalina RP CR3 files (in CRAW) work fine whereas the R5 CR3 do not.

Factors to consider (i.e. experiment with) are compressed versus uncompressed RAW as well as whether HDR is enabled.

For Catalina, I developed a workaround to create custom icons for EOS R5 CR3 files (CRAW, HDR enabled, CR3+HEIF generated). Have a look here. I imagine that the same approach would work with Big Sur.

See below for Finder screenshots.

P.S. HIF files should be renamed with an HEIC extension in order to open with Preview in macOS X Catalina

No member of the Apple product teams will ever respond here. It is a public site.

You can send direct feedback to the macOS product team including your camera model, firmware, and the lense you were using to generate the CR3 image. I say lense because one of the two Apple CameraRAW support bundles lists every vendor's known lense in it. That was a surprise to me.

Neither dialabrain nor I can reproduce your issue of total R6 CR3 image blackout with multiple M1 and Intel Macs between us.

My Canon EOS R6 .cr3 sample file below.

After Big Sur 11.2 update I can open, view and edit that it in Photos.app 6.0 and also view it in QuickLook and Preview. GraphicConverter can also open it with only Apple CoreImage enabled (LibRaw also handles that unlike the old dcraw).

But apparently for some strange reason other Big Sur 11.2 installs fail to open it.

Yes, it works now when Apple intoduced CR3 support to Mac, iPad and iPhone on Feb 2nd 2021. Do the following:

  1. Ensure that you have the latest OS in the device(s).
  2. Open the Apple Photos app in the device, close all other apps and leave the Photos app running idle for a couple of hours.

This fixes the problem. Photos app makes presuamable some corrections and updates to your photos library, therefoe it takes a while.

This could be a problem rooted to my Photos library in iCloud. Out of the 16 most resource consuming processes in my Mac, 8 are related to Photos or iCloud. However, there are no runaway processes and the Mac is not overheating.

I will now let my Mac run idle at least overnight and see what happens.

Thanks, however if I am going to open a program to see the files... I'll open Lightroom and catalog them and just start the work flow process. The point of having Apple FIX the Problem with Big Sur is so I can quickly use the macOS as it was designed and promised to work to assist me in my productivity in a streamline fashion. However, I thank you for your suggestion. I just want APPLE to STOP with the Politicking and get back to what they SHOULD BE doing in the World. ;/

Apple is dependent on the information that they receive from Canon for RAW support. As we are fellow users. we cannot possibly know if that information is complete for the R6 yet, or if it remains a work in progress with more f(x) to appear later.

Canon has issued R6 product advisories as a v1.1.1 firmware update for the R6 in Sept 2020, and another firmware update v1.2.0 in Nov 2020. The expected compatibility with Big Sur 11.2 may depend on firmware currency in your camera, though I have no way of knowing that A Priori.

The R6 raw images that I (and dialabrain) downloaded and that work in Quick Look, Preview, Affinity Photo, but not as Finder icons are based on R6 firmware v1.0.0.
